  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim,

can you confirm that Red bodies are now being cast and not milled? I am very concerned about the longevity and quality of a cast metal body. Or am I worrying for unnecessarily?

Looking forward to your response

Jim & Red team.

You are doing a great job! Any revolution is painful, but the strong survive.
I have faith that you are in this for the long haul and look forward to the day
when you are able to add key staff positions and still be profitable.

We should all understand even the largest companies struggle with many of the points in this post.

I look forward to seeing you & your team at the NAB!

BTW
Does that helicopter really fly? Can you take it in the parking lot and give us a demo?

Best
Dave

Mr. Tail Ends

Your post couldn’t outrage me more, as well as many other people that built successful businesses themselves, posting here.

Judging on your multiple camera order that you mentioned here, maybe you are small business owner yourself? Or you are one of these purchase managers people that have low level ordering skills.

I built few businesses in few different countries and two continents and I do understand growing pains very well. I didn’t experience problems that you are reporting here since I understand that business phase the RED Inc. is currently in and I use a simple logic to avoid falling in to the early operating system pitfalls.

You have no idea what such size of business is all about and I am very surprised that you do not trust the skills of Jim as a 33 years veteran of very successful business.

WHY are we hearing that the design of the camera body has been fundamentally changed from some irate customer on the message board? We have all seen the pictures of the broken cast parts. Is the cast body made of stronger materials? Camera bodies and the screws that mount into them are subjected to quite extreme forces on car rigs and helicopters.

Is the cast body as strong as the machined one?

Where was the announcement?

Can you tell us with which serial number the design changed so we can be on the lookout for issues?

I think I have cast body.
I don’t think there is a big difference in the cast or machined in terms of strength on the body itself.

Small holding parts like top mount or side handle may make a difference.
The body itself has big meaty chunks of metal in places where screws are placed, so no problem here.
Also these places are trim machined there so precision is maintained

I second crewpix. I would definitely like to know the answers to these questions. Obviously the cast body can't be as strong as the machined one if the materials are the same.

Time out: You are jumping to conclusions based on what someone alleged that someone said....

Back to work...

The body is a TANK. The external screw threads in the body are all helicoiled so there will be NO stripping. There are NO issues with the strength of the body.

Getting back to work . . . . .

Relax guys for gods sake - Obviously neither of you have seen the camera as anything that will break it would have utterly destroyed the electronics within. Plus I remember someone rather telling me to "Mellow out and let them work" - in this instance it seems like good advice. Its a non issue

I give real credit to Jim for keeping this thread up here - in my company it would be gone in a flash. Growth is tough - it necessitates change and new ways of thinking. Are there business issues - sure. I bet every one of us has had some in our past. These are minor irritations in a company that is exploding with fresh new ideas that are changing an industry at it's base level.

KEEP DROPPING THE BOMBS JIM!!!!!

Red has issues.. No doubts there.. But what I REALLY care about is that they fix any issues and see to it I got what I paid for.

So far this has happened every time.

Every company has issues. This is common. RED is doing a fine job.

But yet, when you have the chance to simply say, "it's not true, the body is machined" you avoid the issue.

I think what people don't like is avoidance of answering a question or comment. To me, it communicates that it has some validity and you want to gloss over the truth.

Not trying to be mean, just telling as I see it.

Dear Tail Ends:

As a business builder myself (certainly not at the same level as Mr. Jannard but on my 3rd, started this one 9 years ago now grosses $12-$16 Million per year and profitable for the last six years)

Just curious... what was that thread you started about shooting commercially for under 19,000? I guess I'm being nosy, but I'm just confounded about your motivation for shooting nello when you apparently don't need to?

(if you are getting a divorce or something and she has a better lawyer than you had, sorry for touching a sore spot.)

Wait until you get your Red One. Then tell it as you see it. The body is great.

Aren't automobile engines cast?

Arri, Panavision and other manufacturers use plenty of cast parts. I still have some arri cast camera bodies from the 50's so wouldn't worry too much about longevity on cast camera bodies. now some of the smaller arri parts that were cast long ago are another story, like a particular sr cast handgrip, i've seen a container at Clairmont camera with about 20 arri sr handgrips that are broken.

anyways some parts cast way better than others. Arriflex uses both cast and machined parts and some pieces have both.

who cares if its machined or cast. if the quality is good and it works then fine. I've no doubt red will rectify any problems. anyone asking for absolute perfection immediately is being a little unfair. that doesn't mean you shouldn't hold RED's feet to the fire. but these guys are accomplishing pretty amazing stuff and in a rediculously fast timeline. other camera companies spend years and just trickle out very incremental upgrades, what I like to call snailware and they want you to pay all over again for the priviledge. RED hasn't done that. they've certainly delivered more than we asked and for the things that should be fixed they really are fixing them in a pretty fast manner.

My whole Red adventure is casted in gold.
Only problem with Fedex, dropping the boxes and leaving (both shipments).

Tail ends, you alone incurred in a serious series of problems that go beyond comprehension and maybe need some black magic

Tail Ends,

I remember you from yesterdays session, you were quite rude in your line of questioning to Ted. A couple people around me looked at each other like WTF?

Note, I didn't say SOME your QUESTIONS weren't VALID, I just question the tone.

Wow.
