HOLY CRAP this thing is awesome. I got it from NewEgg today, and tested it on DeadMike's Red. Full menu display with the DVI menu option turned on, and image + look around when the menu is turned off.

I got two HDMI>DVI cables, one 16" and one 35". Both worked awesome. I'm going to pick up a short HDMI extension cable to use as a strain relief, and possibly a right angle adapter so less cable weight hangs off the camera.

Thanks to Jarred for pointing me to this monitor. I couldn't be happier.

Good to know. So is is 1 to 1? Or is it stretching to fill the screen? Can you wall mount it via the standard 4x4 screw hole pattern.

The Dell 1708FP is one I got based on other feedback from RED that it worked. Yes it does, but it does a vertical stretch as of the last beta 15 build. I'll test some more but I may buy one of these monitors instead but I'd like to be able to mount it on a C-Stand adapter which uses the wall mount.

Yes it has the VESA mount 4 screw mount on the back, and the base is easy to remove.

Not sure about the 1x1. It's listed res is 1440 x 900. A little higher than RED's HDMI output (1280x720 or 1280x848). But it's so hard to tell what is going on inside the monitor, and I haven't been through all the menu's.

The image looked awesome. In the image only mode on the RED it was perfect ratio, when the menus were enabled we got a minor amount of squishing, but again I haven't been through all the monitor's menus so I could be missing something.

Put that bad boy on one of these:

And mount it on a C-stand and your good to go.

Filmtools link.

Those things are huge though! I think I've worked out a much cheaper/smaller option. I'll post pix if it works out.

Hanns-G me

Hanns-G me

I got the Hanns-G 19" LCD, 1440 by 900 rez, for $179 from Tiger Direct. I wanted something big enough for judging focus, for noticing gack in the frame and with enough vertical pixels to exceed the 848 (720 plus menus) spec.

Now if someone can tell me how to get that monitor to map the pixels 1 for 1 and just leave a thin black border I'll buy them a beer. I figure that last scaling step isn't making it any easier to spot a focus buzz :shiftyph34r:

Good Ac's never buzz. I remember back when we didn't get no fancy pants on board monitors. We had to actually pay attention! Now the only thing I pay attention to is the craft service girl.

Hi Mike,

I've been wondering how to get the full menus & waveforms/histograms out onto a monitor without having the EVF or the Red LCD. The HDMI>DVI cable is interesting - would that work with any onboard 3rd party mini-monitors like the Panasonic, Astro or Transvideo or are they all strictly HD-SDI inputs only (is there any way of converting it that you know of)? Also I'm assuming the professional range of LCDs like the Panasonic 17" don't have DVI inputs?? Basically it seems like there's absolutely no way of getting these damned histograms & waveforms out unless you have a Red LCD (unconvinced by), an EVF (where are they?!!) or else invest in another HDMI monitor (a bit of a waste if you've already got a great monitor like the Panasonic 17").

I'm about to get the same, they are easier to find than the 17" which are no longer fabricated apparently.
It would be interesting to know if anyone has been able to do a 1:1 pixel mapping with ANY computer LCD monitor. I haven't read about anyone being successfull doing that yet.

Dell 2405 does it for sure. I've done it with RED. Well as of a couple builds ago that worked. I guess I should check again. Personally I want the smallest thing that'll do 1:1. Once you're there it's big enough. Don't understand why the 1708FP won't do 1:1 via that input but the menu item is ghosted.

I still kinda think RED could pad the signal coming out so it had black lines above and below that created 1280x1024 so most monitors would show it correctly.

Thanks for the info. I agree it's not very convenient to use a 24" monitor to show what could be shown just as well on a 17".
Also, the Dell 2405 is no longer available, so I'm trying to figure out what other monitors have a 1:1 pixel mapping function.

What are you guys finding for decent HDMI cables though? I shot a commercial with an early model red and the HDMI port was fairly shallow and did not hold the cable end in very well. Along with that any of the HDMI cables we could find were quite stiff and not that good to run from the camera to video village.

If someone has found a HDMI out cableing system that works well I would love to hear and see what they are useing.

Another post of the day i get to hang on my wall... thanks!

no problem man.. you can buy me a beer in vegas :)

If there's no squeeze, there will be a small letterbox to convert from 16:10 to 16:9 aspect ratio. Is it letterboxed in image only mode? Thanks.

Oh, also, I looked at the user manual on the hanns-g website, and there doesn't appear to be a 1:1 setting, just for people's reference.

I looked at nearly every user manual on the Dell website to see which monitors have a 1:1 and/or 16:9 setting. The 2407wfp, 2408wfp, and E248wfp all have 1:1 and aspect ratio settings. As do the 2007wfp and sp2008wfp. None of the 17" or 19" had those options. HOWEVER, I bought a 2007wfp thinking that it would work since it has those options and is the "top of the line" and it wouldn't display the HDMI/menus mode, only the 720p preview. It displayed the preview at 1:1 or at 16:9, so it looked correct. But no menus. I can't say whether any of the others will work. But it looks like I'm slowly working my way through all of the Dell options, so I'll let you know every time I have to return another one : )

SO, as of build 15 2.2.1, DON'T buy the Dell 1908wfp or 2007wfp if you want menus.

As far as the HDMI cables go. I agree they are usually WAY to heavy to mount to the camera. So I got a 90degree adapter and a 2meter HDMI extension cable. Then that acts like a dolly pullaway, and takes all the stress off the camera.
