  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RELEASED: FIRMWARE - BUILD 15 (v2.2.5)

... once a small hole opens so one bean can fall out... will more pour out as well... ?

...Raw view = 4k monitor at NAB?

I will be happy with this even if it is out to all monitoring options at this point. This should make a few people who bought monitors with waveform capabilities happy since the waves'll actually show what is being recorded not what it would be with all the metadata baked it.

Sure it would be nice if a person could throw the looks out to the various ports so that the less knowledgeable don't have a conniption over how washed out and over exposed it looks to them... let's get greedy and say that the EVF gets the RAW for the Op, the Red LCD gets a boosted contrast for the AC, the HDMI gets the "ohhh pretty" look for the director and producer, while the HD-SDI can get its own look just for going to tape... and make it 1080p.

See Jim, give us a meter and we want a yottameter. It is your own damn fault you know. You go about promising us the sky and then delivering... what the hell did you expect? There is nobody to blame but yourself.

Hey, while we're at it... can there PLEASE be a way to disable the menus/OSD in the EVF to make it match the LCD's "operator's mode"? The inability to turn those off will truly frustrate operators when they finally get their hands on one of these puppies. One of those buttons on the EVF could be assigned to it quite easily.

Simultaneous outputs was incredibly important and you guys finally did it. RAW view was next on my list. Now EVF "operator's mode" is next. After you guys get to that, I'll have more "demands" too... :)

This one I don't understand - what are you asking for here / why are you asking for this Brook ?

The ability to not be distracted by the shooting information while using the EVF is invaluable, but I could have sworn it had this feature already. Didn't I see it work on Blair's? Maybe not or maybe it has to be linked to the LCD? Still waiting patiently for mine so...

As it stands, the EVF shows everything that is visible in the "OSD" mode of the LCD. It shows the image/lookaround, but it also shows the project settings, magazine details, audio meters, histogram, etc. Those things can be distracting to an operator. The LCD [being 1024x600] takes full advantage of its size when in "operator's mode" [enabled by clicking the far-right button, it zooms in to just the image/look-around and hides all of the menus/meters]. Now obviously enabling this same feature [hide all menus/meters] in the EVF wouldn't result in zooming in [as the EVF's native resolution shows all of these details], but putting simple black bars in place of all of the menus and meters would be fantastic.

This would mean that the only visible data in the EVF with this mode enabled would be what you see in the HD-SDI preview output - a 720p signal showing the image, frame lines and look-around with timecode and clip overlays. Black bars would take the place of the menus/meters.

I hope that clarifies things. Thanks for taking note! Maybe I'm a total idiot and just haven't found this button yet... stranger things have happened.

While I'm at it... changing the text in the viewfinder [ALL text, including all of the menus/meters and timecode/clip overlays] from white to another color [a grey, for example] would help eliminate the rainbow/moiré looking artifacts you can see in the viewfinder sometimes [generally when viewed slightly off-angle or when quickly changing your eye's focus from one side of the image to another]. Having the text in white keeps those "pots" on full blast. The white text is distracting in a simple sense, but in a more complex sense, having those "pots" [or whatever they're called] at full blast makes the individual red, green and blue pixels stand out more as the human eye looks for color. When your eye jumps across the EVF quickly, the white will separate into red, green and blue artifacts. Not so bad while simply looking through the EVF, but a little frustrating when trying to operate.

If you want to see what I'm talking about, quickly look around inside of the EVF while the camera is booting [when it shows "Initializing" on the screen]. That over-presence of white-on-black will create ideal conditions for seeing what I'm referring to.

Yes. I actually agree.

We were involved in a very high-profile camera test for a studio feature and all the film guys asked if they could turn off all the meters in the EVF as they found them distracting.

So, frame guides, TC and tally light (recording) only.

Are there any more reported issues with release build 15? I hear that the LCD stuttering still persists and that there are some boot up problems.

Bad news. Our first day with the Release Build 15 (2.2.5) and the camera froze on bootup about 30 percent of the time. It sometimes took three attempts to get it to work.

We also had LCD stutter in the lower third, which we hadn't seen for weeks. For us, the release build seems less stable than the beta, except that the spontaneous power-down seems to have stopped.

The way to fix this, until there is an official fix is to pull the battery, push the power button a few times, then plug the battery back in and the camera will boot.

Also, I think that the LCD flicker has to do with power on the batteries being low, I've notice way more lcd flicker when batteries are below 25%.

Film guys are such wussies. (j/k)

I'm curious to hear about their reaction to the quality of the EVF. Other than the electronic stuff I swear the image quality looks like it could be a straight optical path to me. I haven't done a side by side with my SLR yet, but I find the image quality of the EVF amazing.

I'm actually shocked that you can't turn that stuff off already. I need to be able to turn those off. If I can do it on the LCD I also need to do it on the EVF.

EVF and LCD

On the LCD its not "turned off".

Its a change in the image scaling, as the LCD is 1024 x 600 and the graphic feed to the EVF and LCD is 1280 x 848. So by changing the crop / scale factor we can use either the full height or full width of the LCD display. Hence "with menus" or "without". The EVF doesn't need a scaler, so its always 1280 x 848 pixels.

Selectable menu data is interesting subject, something for us to think about for the future.....
