  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CF field backup

Thanks guys. Why would you not recommend re-using the cards until backed-up to computer, are these sort of drives especially prone to malfunction/corruption?

Hi Steve.... No, I believe Crewpix is exercising a good CYA technique. As you know anything can and might happen in the chain of production, it is always best to be as diligent as one can.

I have a Nexto... but have not taken delivery of my Red yet. The Hyperdrive looks cool but I have not used it.

I am also with Paulee, www.mydigitaldiscount.com was no problem.

Hope that helps.

ps--Steve, nice website, I look forward to seeing your wildlife footage.

Many people here speak highly of Nexto and Hyperdrive products - but the one big caveat with either of those is that you only have a single copy with those systems.

If you reuse your cards and the drve in the backup device should happen to fail then you loose everything you've backed up.

The chances are slim, but drives do fail, especially likely when they are in non-controlled conditions. Best practice is to have redundant storage - this means either a mirrored RAID set, or (ideally in my opinion) two stand-alone drives.

Our SolidStore product is targeted toward this very role - however it's not available yet, so at the moment I am not aware of any products which offer any better features that Nexto or Hyperdrive products.

Hey Dylan... I agree 100% and have been waiting for the release of your product. I am glad you brought up the "SolidStore", she looks to be a great "in the field" solution.

Cheers,

Andrew

We're building a few prototypes and making software at the moment.

I'm fairly optimistic that we can be shipping something by September - maybe earlier.

But as Jannard says, everything is subject to change...

"but the one big caveat with either of those is that you only have a single copy with those systems. "

that why you buy one of each ( nexto & hyperdrive) and you make 2 backups !!

Completely agree using 2 portable CF backup devices.

Most important however is a third backup device...laptop etc where you can review takes for data corruptions or other stuff that may spoil take before striking set/losing actors etc.

The SolidStore has a read-only network share, so from a laptop you'll be able to directly access the archived media in the field for spot checking. So rather than having to make a separate third copy onto a laptop, or unmount one of the SolidStore drives and attach to a laptop, it's simply a matter of an ethernet connection.

If you're feeling game, with the addition of an 802.11 router you'd be able to have wireless footage review (although I think playing any of the footage would be a bit of a challenge).

Definitely agree with all that. I was very interested to see on that mydigitaldiscount.com site that they're doing Nextos with SSDs built in (only 32GB though & mucho expensivo!) I'd still be a bit nervous about just one copy of anything even with Nand's higher MTBF. The handiest thing about these units to me is their verification functions, plus their back-up speed & portability for those shots when you're in tricky places (I can't really envisage lugging a MacBook Pro + spare battery + bus-powered Raid 1 hard-drive up the side of a mountain in torrential rain even if it's all in a pelicase. In this scenario 2 Nextos make a lot of sense to me...or just film on the RedDrive - that's a hard-drive just like everything else in the equation).

p.s. looking forward to seeing your device up & running...good luck!!

Gig-E. We can setup DHCP (client or server) or have manual setup.

As for lugging things up a mountain - I've been thinking about a SolidStore micro unit too, depending on how the normal model goes, but something that would allow two bare 2.5" drives to and a CF slot in a very small package - but my research so far makes it look as if that will be a somewhat more difficult product to put together.
