  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I tried to think of 3 most important features I would like to have in addition to the already impressive list that Red can currently provide. Here it is in order of importance:

1. Cache, minimum 4 seconds (Phantom, HDCAM and Panasonic have this extremely useful feature) and it is "must have" for any wildlife film maker.

2. Sleep-mode or an ability to power the camera up in less than 2 seconds.

3. Ability to display magnified (pixel for pixel or larger) view on one screen (for focusing) while another screen shows full view (for composition) with focus assist and other information and overlays.

How much do I need those features? I'd easily justify a 50% premium if it offered all of the above.

I'd be interested to hear your 3 top most wishes that you would do (almost) anything for.

i will be greedy and make 3 wishes for camera and post each :)

post:
1) sdk / third party support allowed for redcode raw
2) missing windows tools (QT and/or AVI wrapper & redline)
3) EDLs in Redcine (ok, crimson helps a lot there already ;)

camera
1) pixel by pixel focus check.
2) service center(s) in the EU / Germany
3) being able to drop the 3hrd feature from my wishlist in order to give the red team a well deserved break :)

1) Third party support allowed for redcode raw in post.
2) Third party support allowed for redcode raw in post.
3) Third party support allowed for redcode raw in post.

(This post will probably be deleted or moved...)

1. Sleep Mode
2. Pixel-for-Pixel focus check
3. Audio over Hd-SDI

I truly hope these get in soon. Plus they should all be doable via a firmware change

Why would this be deleted? It is what we all want...

Build 16 is all about the image... we are adding many things to our list as we go along. Don't confuse that with what we promised at NAB 2006. :-)

top 3 wish list

top 3 wish list

1. A tungston balanced sensor
2. Less compression
3. A machanical shutter

With out these red will never be the end all be all camera it will just be a camera that works most of the time in most situations but will never take over the big screen.:shiftyph34r:

1. LCD/EVF/Preview allowed to set individual overlay settings during simultaneous output.
2. Pixel to pixel focus assist.
3. Audio support in REDCine/REDAlert ASAP.

Also 4.) The format confirmation screen automatically appearing when inserting a blank card again.

I'm already happy!
Yet if RED is going to keep progressing as fast as it has been in firmware development, then I'm going to be ecstatic!

Jim, I was told by someone that knows you that you don't like people praising you becuase you feel uncomfortable.

Well, I'm afraid your just going to have to get used it.

Keep on truckin!

build fifteen is joyous but...

1) the ability to save preset camera "looks" and assign these to a shortcut button on the front of the cam (this is pretty close, yes?)
2) the ability to spit different looks to different HD-SDI feeds
3) the ability to set a look in redcine and save it as a look for the camera.

oh... hang on, can i swap #2 for No black sunspots?

macka

1.) 1 to 1 pixel zoom
2.) Free assignable buttons
3.) Audio and Timecode out on HD-SDI

What is a requirement and what is a solution?

John,

These are solutions to non-existing (and/or unspecified) problems that you listed. Red Team knows better how features can or can not be reasonably implemented (a.k.a. solutions). What Jim is keen to hear are the problems that we are trying to solve (a.k.a. requirements). So, for the entertainment value, let me attempt to reverse engineer your "real problems" from what you specified:

1. Your problem: My footage looks too red - rather than providing "tungsten balanced sensor" you could just fit a pair of cool Oakley sunglasses instead. Problem solved at cost of just $200 bucks :matrix: ! Or change your colour temps in RedCine if you haven't nailed it in the camera.

2. Your problem: I would like to use more hard disc space without any visible improvement in image quality. Solution: fill your hard disc space with some music, porn or preferably both. Or, are you trying to tell us that you are able to see some compression artefacts in Red Raw  ? I can't, despite best efforts.

3. Is your problem that camera operates so quietly that you don't know if it is working or is it that the electronic shutter is so precise that you don't see any fliker in your footage that you like so much in film-based footage? Either one can be solved diferently without installing a mechanical shutter.

You see, a smart-arse engineer like me :nerd: could give you the exact "features" that you asked for immediately and inexpensively. But, have I addressed your real need?

A well specified requirement must reflect your real need - the problem that you are trying to fix. This is useful to know and it is great that Red is listening. But, it has to be well-specified and supported. As a measure of my need, I specified the amount of $ that I'm happy to put on the table. This is how much I can save as a user. I don't know how much it would cost to achieve.

My requirements may be achieved simply or may be impossible. I don't know, but Red Team knows that. Only they can make the decision if it is achievable and how. The best we can assist is to specify our real needs and quantify them with $$$$. That's useful to know for any manufacturer.

I would wish for..

-Faster Start Time / Sleep Mode
-Update Red Alert So Audio Clips Stay Attached To Reference QT's

AND

-Intermediate Remote Camera Control System

(That would make my job much easier)
-Log Clips As They're Shot
-Immediately determine Corrupt Files
------Boost My Day Rate-------- :D

Dominick Estarella
