  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PELENG 8mm Fisheye

Lol, or they will disappear! I was going to be part of the group buy but then they said there weren't enough. Apparently the eBay sellers have an isolated few. Perhaps the factory shut down? Whatever, I bought mine while the buying was good. Once there's 4000 Reds on the market they could dry up. Heck, once a few hundred people realize that you can have an awesome PL lens for under $400, they may not be $400 anymore :-). I don't see how they can go down.

Btw Jeff, I just went on eBay and got three more of those filters. Now how do I convert it to ND?

Okay, you scared me straight Shawn! Just went on and bought one for $384.

If they go down next week you owe me $50!:) :) :)

You're absolutely right, this is such a cool lens and to get it for 6% of the cost of the 18-50 is pretty amazing.

The frustrating thing is all my clients will want me to shoot on it exclusively cause it looks cool, even though I have "expensive real" lenses in my kit!

It took like a week and a half for mine to arrive.
But since I didn't have a Red or another PL camera to put it on - I went ahead and bought one for my Nikon camera too. And judging from the Nikon Peleng, I'm pretty sure I'll be very happy with my PL Peleng. :)

To convert the filters to NDs, you have to break the glass out of them and replace with a glass ND material of the same thickness. ...This is my plan, but I haven't found the right ND material yet.

Doug Underdahl (Long Valley Equipment / RED Nikon mount guy) has done this with these Peleng filters in the past. Last time I asked him about it (a month ago), he was seeing if his filter material supplier could get different densities. I think he said he had N6.

Shawn. you got your peleng in PL mount. working well? Doug's version fixed something where the iris and focus were fixed... have you had any problems?

also does anyone know about this lens as a Canon mount?

Hi everyone,
Jim, you made a good purchase.
Shawn, don't be afraid. You won't loose your $50. The price will not go down as the manufacturer has already increased the cost for our production in April.
We're the main dealer of the Peleng lenses in the world.

Good to know my investment is safe! This is a truly impressive lens for the money!

Cheers,

hey East Wave!!!!

if I shoot on the Canon mount Peleng will I get black corners shooting on a Canon 40D?

If I shoot 4k on the Peleng PL mount on RED will there be black corners?

You won't see black corners on the Canon 40D as well as on the RED.
Please note, you may not use the same lens for Canon and RED cameras unless you have a special equipment and skills to adjust the mount.
Peleng lens with PL mount is professionally adjusted for movie production purposes. If you remove the PL mount and use the Canon or any other ones you have to re-adjust it again when you change the lens back to the PL mount.
The common mistake is to use the Peleng lens with Canon or Nikon mounts through different adapters and mini 35 on movie cameras. This combination won't give you a good quality. Only a Peleng lens with professionally adjusted PL mount is suitable for it.

Mine said it's being shipped from Russia. My camera doesn't arrive until May/June+ so bring on the snail-mail! :calm:

"Please note that the shipping is from Belarus (Russia) and usually takes 14 -18 days."

ok thanks East Wave.

will the Peleng Canon mount used with the Birger mount on the RED work out fine?

PS does the Peleng auto focus when used on the Canon 40D?

on your site, there doesn't seem to be a PL option. http://www.eastwave.ca/products/lenses/peleng.html

and also the black corner that is on the thumnail on that page.... what camera is that taken on? If the 40D does not create black corners, which camera does?

I can pretty much guarantee you that lens will not autofocus on any camera :-). Although wide-angle and fisheye lenses usually have a pretty deep field of focus anyway.

Peleng fisheye technology was invented many years ago for Russian space industry. You may see the Peleng lens with the diameter of 1 m in the BelOMO museum. This lens was installed in the Russian space station.
Later this unique technology of the Peleng lens was adopted for a regular photography.
The lens was originally made for film photo cameras and gives a circular image on a regular photo film. That's why there are black corners on a full frame size. For digital cameras with a regular matrix size as well as movie cameras you won't see black corners due to the size of matrix. Only full matrix cameras (e.g. Canon 1D , 5D etc) may get the same circular image. All other cameras will have a croped version.
Peleng lens is a full manual lens (all focusing and aperture settings are manually on the lens).
For film and digital movie cameras like RED only Peleng lens with PL mount is usable due to a special adjustment and calibration.

ok great history thanks a bunch.

I know that no one has tested the Peleng Canon mount with the Birger adapter on RED.... but that's what I'm thinking instead canon mount with the Birger?
