  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Chaps,

Shooting Build 15.2.1.7 in 2K 2:1 @100fps to the Drive

AC was playing back and was pressing play, rewind, stop, end etc in quick succession (not sure of the exact combination) whilst a clip was playing.

Camera shut down and rebooted itself mid clip. Once rebooted I wanted to check the clip was ok. I went to the same clp and played back at the point where it had rebooted I now had a half green, half white screen and playback just stopped. Thought I had a dud recording. So I did another full boot cycle. This time The "initialising"was blue and so was the red logo etc. Oh dear.

Did another shutdown, completely removed battery, unplugged LCD (which I know was a bit wobbly on this build). Waited 10 seconds. Restarted and all OK this time. PLayed back clip and it was all OK this time - played the entre clip without fault.

Just thought I'd let you know. I have noticed the lag when playing back and skipping etc but never had this problem before.

Another Build 15 bug...

Another Build 15 bug...

Don't know if anyone has already reported this, but Build 15 also disabled the User 2 button (zoom in focus check or whatever it's called) when recording. The button would be fully functional when not recording, but it wouldn't work if recording.

Also, the LCD would flicker , but that's been spoken about a lot here already.

I believe that is an intentional change this build. Before, you'd get an error notice that you were in 2x mode. This build they just automatically took you out of 2x mode when you pressed record instead of getting an error and disabled 2x while recording.

yeah. too many people were recording in the zoom mode and realizing it later. It was a requested change.

wait a sec...
Pressing the focus zoom-in makes the RECORDED image blow up as well?
That's retarded.
Anyone at Red ever accidentally record the date and time on their DV home movie camera?
NOTHING that we do to VIEW the image as OPERATORS should have an effect on the RECORDED image. Not false color, not zoom-in, not nada!
Red, repeat after me:
"NOTHING that we do to VIEW the image as OPERATORS should have an effect on the RECORDED image"
"NOTHING that we do to VIEW the image as OPERATORS should have an effect on the RECORDED image"
"NOTHING that we do to VIEW the image as OPERATORS should have an effect on the RECORDED image"

I agree that we should be able to shoot with the LCD in zoomed mode. Give us focus pullers a bit of a chance!

Plus, the big dramatic red 'X' configuration error warning is a bit over the top! You guys need to remember that our paying clients see what goes out over the video output. Things like that make us look bad!

:w00t:
No, what happened was if you accidentally left the focus zoom on, while recording you were not seeing the actual framing, but instead you were monitoring the zoomed in view.

Stuart, I like what you have done in build 15, forcing the view back on recording.

build 15 is beta...make sure your clients know that or YOU make all of US (camera owners) look bad.

beta builds are not for everyone, if you have a strong relationship with the DP, Director, Client & Agency; then by all means, rock 15, 2.1.7; if this is a new client and you can't muster what it takes to be honest with them, then put 13 on and call it a day.

but then you will have to explain the fps in 2k and the monitor situation.

these builds are beta for a reason, everything has not been worked out, however some things have, if you can handle the good with the bad, go for it, if not...go back.

just my opinion and an interpretation of the firmware disclaimers that come with each alpha and beta build.

Couldn't agree more. I'm shooting 15.2.1.7 for the framerates and monitoring options. Clients are fully briefed and aware that a roll back to 13 may be called for in worst case scenario. In fact they are kind of smug at being one of the first to use this cutting edge stuff....

The Zoom in function on monitor outputs while recording should definitely be possible. It just must be made very obvious in the EVF and LCD. With a small 2x Zoom text in the lower right and the surround view and other data overlay disappearing, it's just not quite enough to remind the operator in a high pressure situation that they are "punched in".

Perhaps make a RED outline around the edge of the screen or a flashing "2X zoom" text. Or better yet, maybe alternate the "2x Zoom" from RED to White so it draws the operators eye to it.

But to have it for focus checking (punch in, check focus, punch out) while recording is sometimes a very nice feature.

(This may gave already been dealt with in a new version of build 15, but I saw the thread and figured I'd chime in.)

I really hope they bring back the zoom in/focus check feature in the next build for recording mode. I use it a LOT when shooting just to verify focus as the shot changes. If people are recording in 2x mode without realizing it until afterwards, they should just pay attention and do their jobs. Seriously. That feature was great, and I need it while recording (not just before and after recording). Bring it back!

For 4K recordings only at this moment - waiting on more feedback.

My rental client shooting a feature up in Orlando actually went back to 14 because of the lack of zoom during shooting, apparently want to punch in on the fly.

Couldn't this just be setup as a user option?

I can see where this would also be useful for say a macro shot where we are set up on a tripod and know we aren't going to change framing but might want to check and/or shift focus during the shot.
