  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

INDIES Shot on Red

Endless threads about the potential of effect for skew, IR filtration, blue channel noise, fan noise and yet people are using these cameras daily and producing amazing content and making money.

Not to nitpick (because you know I LOVE this camera). But isn't the IR issue something that *always* happens under strong ND use? And strong ND is a pre-requisit for using Red in hard sunlight. I'm not sure "potential of effect" is a correct phrase. I look forward to hearing from Red what the fix is.

But of the general gist of your post, I completely agree!

The concern is that FUD will make it hard to get quality clients with actual budgets to choose the RedOne over other options. If there is a bunch of low production value RedOne sourced footage that anyone with a browser can access then it can be used as a club to keep the RedOne from being selected.

In much the same way as Ferrari/Bentley/Lamborghini suffer from low car sales due to the bad driving skills of some that may drive them?

It's just a camera, and as such deserves no Gestapo chic.

Same here.

Same here.

I'm surprised at the elitist attitude here sometimes. Ironic.

I'm reluctant to post due to the Pro vs. joe attitude that I sometimes sense on reduser.

I confess.. I'm a no-lo-micro budget indie film maker (as opposed to INDY filmmaker). I guess I better hide the cheap gear, XL2's, and self made rigs...

In addition to studying big budget films, I actively seek out the small budget, self-made, film industry outsider stuff.

Experience has shown me that on occasion a switched-on person will overcome major obstacles, discover new ways to get results, change the mindset of others and in the process inspire and ignite and set fire to a group who *want it*.

Mark, hang on to 4kforindies.com.

I'm surprised at the elitist attitude here sometimes. Ironic.

Whoa here. I shop Home Depot for interesting lights as well. My comments were not intended to be 'elitist', as i am anything but that.

Ironically, a 1Kw Home Depot shop light works better with the 320ASA RED One than a 125ASA HVX-200. Independent of aesthetics, smaller/lesser lights are better matched to the more sensitive RED One than the crop of HDV cameras.

Michael (now that my shop lights are relegated to lighting catering tents) Morlan.

:)

Responding to Mark's original point;

While having a "Major Feature" Film" section at red.com helps legitimize RED One for a certain market segment, it would also be great to distinguish any project that shows off the RED One's abilities. The deciding factor should only be the quality of the imagery. This is a camera company after all. RDC did a fine job showing off their own imagery during development and the user community has responded with many fine examples via other channels. It might be valuable for some of the best work to be featured at red.com as well.

Bring on all the movies- bad or good. I don't care- I'll watch them all. Maybe the next Rocky Horror Picture Show will be shot on red.

Okay,

I have been holding my breath until a few other folks cranked out some indies on RED - so it's time ...

Dear RED,

Please create a Indies Shot on RED section on the www.RED.com website.

We all understand that indies will always take risk, and to convince a wider segment to adopt the technology - it is obviously why Red should promote the fact that Studio films and big movies with big stars are shooting on Red.

Good enough for the best, good enough for the rest. Understood.

And we also all know that many indies films are ... well ... a bit rough around the edges, or just flat our bad - that being said - I think it also speaks volume that MANY indies are shooting features on Red cameras - and I think the general public has no clue.

And some of these indies on RED will get released and/or be seen at major international film festivals.

I suggest the following:

Separate section under "SHOT ON RED" called "Indies on RED" or "Indies Shot on Red"

Artwork thumbnail w/title and LINK to filmmakers site for the project.
This is also a nice way to kinda give something back to those filmmakers busting their ass and yankin' CF cards ...

Thanks in advance for your consideration!!

Sincerely,

Red Warrior

Mark....I love the way you think!

Sorry to come in late; just wrapped another fun RED Day. It's as if you were reading our minds here. For the last week it's been clear to me that there is a tremendous disconnect between theory and the real world. Endless threads about the potential of effect for skew, IR filtration, blue channel noise, fan noise and yet people are using these cameras daily and producing amazing content and making money. I think almost anything can be armchaired to death, but the fact of the matter is, this camera rocks!

And RED needs to be more vocal in showing the community, and public at large, that this camera, in its first 6 months on the market, is doing amazing things. And not by the "big" names, but by small indie production facilities. Every day, this camera is being used to shoot commercials, music videos, short films, feature films, documentary and episodic television....the list goes on and on. Absolutely, we need to have a front page shouting to the world that the image is nothing short of amazing, it's being shot and edited daily and the success is enormous. Frankly, I don't think that the content quality is the issue; I, for one, would never be so presumptuous to say what stays and what goes, not after someone put their heart and soul into it. We would simply be a stage. I've already contacted our webmaster and the wheels are turning (see Mark, great minds run on the same track ;-) to make a block to showcase our customer's work. I'll try and set up a program soon where you can send in a link, a short testimonial, some background info and we can put a spotlight on all the awesome work that is going on out there.

Thanks RED Warrior!

Yes RED DAY was fun indeed Jon, and so was meeting you and some of the RED team I hadn't yet had the pleasure to meet.

I was also thinking on something similar, Mark had a great idea of posting this, and as usual we are happy to see RED take the little ones in serious consideration, as we likely love you guys way more then the big ones do.

We Indies, are so in very different forms, we go from very little Indies to very big Indies, and any very little Indie can no doubt become a very big Indie with just the making of one good project, so I believe that we are all very important, not any less then the big studio project in which RED's are currently involved.

Our passion and dreams travel far more then any Big studio project ever will.

Hope to see soon many Indie projects shot on RED, reach the Theaters world wide.

Ciao

I think some owners of RED tend to feel this need to protect RED from getting into the wrong hands. I don't even have one and I sort of feel that way too. Fine. But seriously, that's not for anyone to say.

Or more accurately - it's for Red/Jim to say... and they said it already, by setting the price at $17.5k ($35k with gear), and by releasing it as a beta months before it was "finished," and by conducting nearly all their customer support on a publicly accessible forum. Live or die by it, transparency and accessibility were established as a philosophical decision since the early days. (And it's worth noting that it *has* caused them problems along the way, particularly as the size of the crowd has grown.)

But the point remains that if they wanted only rock stars to have access, they'd make the thing cost a quarter of a million bucks, or go rental-only like Dalsa or Panavision. For good or ill, this cat's out of the bag, imho.

I love the idea of showing more footage from Indies, etc. If there was a polling system similar to the one that YouTube uses where people might vote on e.g. quality, camerawork, lighting, story, music, effects, etc then the cream would rise to the top. People would naturally gravitate to watching the highest rated and the dreck would sink to the bottom.

And anyone who watches the entire list to get to the bottom has far too much time on their hands to be a "mover and shaker".

A lifetime ago, taking a director class with Theirry Pathe he taught -"Watch as many bad movies as you can - and when you realize why they're bad - don't do that."
