So now it has its own thread. Shot this test footage on Friday. The first and last clip are 4k. Everything else is 2k 75fps. I think Redcine rendered the 2k stuff a little soft for some reason. I'll have to investigate that further. For now enjoy (1080p, h.264)

Hi,

Nice footage.

I just got back from a one week shoot in the french alps for a snowboard movie. Unfortunately our RED isn't in our hands yet, so I rented a couple XDCAM EX's to do the job!

So, I'm curious, what was the shutter angle of the slow-mo footage? Did you use any Filters, ND, Pola? How did you focus? Focus assist? Red LCD?

I ask all this, because we had a couple of issues with the XDCAM EX, like pink snow when using an ND .6 and a circular pola and leaving the WB at 5700°K (any WB done by the cam ended up greenish). I still didn't figure out if the ND or the pola was doing that effect!
Focusing was a guess at the LCD in the bright sunlight and the EVF is just a joke in terms of resolution.

So what was your experience?

Jeff

Snow Exposure is HARD!

Snow Exposure is HARD!

Warren Miller has always shot 16mm because, in his estimation no video camera has ever been able to capture the delicate differences in highlights between snow and sky... anyone who's ever tried shooting DV or HD knows how hard it can be -- heck, look at the Nagano Olympics -- there's very little depth to the snow exposure -- and that was with controlled lighting (one of the lighting designers was a mentor of mine).

All I can say is holy crap. That looks fantastic. Not only does it compete with Miller's perfect exposure, but wow... it's crystal clear. Not a bit of grain in sight. Cheers to you Jesse! Perfect example of what this cam can do in difficult situations.

Now if only I could get those tracking numbers.... :)

Jesse,

If you want to come to Heavenly the last 2 or 3 weeks in March, the Solider Camp at Heavenly will be going on. Some really good park skier's and snowboards will be here.

Lumatik, I shot mostly with a pola and ND.9. It was pretty bright out there so I was able to get a fairly deep dof to help keep the action in focus. Focus was done with the Red LCD. Could have really used the EVF, but, alas I have not. LCD did fine in the bright sunlight, but I was kind of guessing on the focus a little. If I was doing a full length ski film, I would definitely find some nice s16 zoom lenses to shoot with. It would make the camera lighter, more portable, and more versatile in terms of selecting focal lengths on the fly. I can say that skiing down the hill with 50lbs of camera gear is a bit scary. At one point, I caught an edge while carrying the camera in its built out form - my heart was in my throat. :)

Yes. On a sunny day, if you want shallow, you're going to want a 1.2 to go along with that pola. But beware trying to focus on fast moving subjects at that aperture.

Warren Miller has always shot 16mm

umm, no he hasn't. In 2005/2006 he shot on a Sony hd camera. I don't know which one but I guarantee you most of that film was not shot on 16mm or 35mm. reason I know this is because I had to do an interview with a staff member working on his stand at the London ski show that year.

cool footage as well. i just wish my camera would get here asap before all the snow melts here in verbier. it has melted so much in the last two weeks its a joke.

woow:devil: first it is amazing to see this quality proof clip :w00t:
2nd i think shutter speed problem it's not shown clearly with those fast pans
3rd how red performes in this climate

Btw i think WB it was easy to be done there

Hahaha... Just remember, don't white balance of yellow snow :)

Words to live by mos def.

Great footage Jesse, thanks for being one of the first to post footage tracking a subject with a constantly moving background. Joelnet made a great point that has been nagging at me. I am less worried now.

Jesse, I love this genre and have been dying to see something like this shot on Red.

Have fun...

Andrew
