  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ET Breakout Box

...have you compared it to Sim Video's own breakout box? that looks pretty sweet too...

I haven't.. I am being completely biased.. I went with the ET before I knew about Sim Video. Actually, it was ET that told me about SiM. I dig ET's design sense. They make great products that are more than functional for what they are. Simvideo has some nice stuff too

i've ordered ET's breakout box as well...just waiting for the evf mount to be ready and for them to ship altogether... so it's good to hear you like yours!!!

I want a better solution than a simple BNC only breakout box. I want all the ports to have full size connectors. So I am waiting for a company to do this.

Even better would be not only a plate that adapts to full size connectors, but a multi-port that a pigtail cable could be plugged into to that another breakout box could be installed a distance away.

That would rule

I'm wondering how the ET breakout box attaches. Do we have to drill holes in the camera?

No you just remove the tiny screw under the connectors. The BB seats very securely over the mini connectors and only one additional screw through the existing hole.

ET's B-box is $580. It is nice and compact.

I'd be very surprised if the Sim downconverter/BOB could be anywhere south of $2500. The AJA downconverter is almost that much by it's self, I've priced the boards and they're $1200-1500 alone. We'll have to see but from what I gather Sim is trying to place their products in a higher price tier than ET. We'll have to wait till NAB to see if the design and quality warrant the extra $.

$580 for a "breakout box" that just changes four ports pisses me off too much to buy it. I know ET is a small company, and I should have more sympathy. I guess I'm more upset that Red didn't make one for $200 tops.

I believe there are a lot of other solutions coming.. Everyone knows this is needed.

But Shawn, I'm bummed to say, this add-on will be pricy no matter how you cut it. Dissappointing but true.

Personally I am very excited to see what NAB holds.

True...but how much is not having broken HDSDI ports worth to you? I understand that RED was trying to keep the camera small, but sometimes it's just wiser to make a little bit bigger and FAR more durable.

love my ET box. well designed and very unobtrusive.

That's the bizarre thing. Red DID make the camera a couple pounds heavier and built it like a tank. and then left all the connectors small anyhow.

I'm going to wait for a while before I start buying things for the right side of the camera.
