  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can the Red Pro 5" monitor be used with other Red models, including Raven and Red One?

Hi,

I've just posted the question below in Red One forum, but I'm affraid that's a too old camera and no one goes to that forum anymore... so I'll repost it here in case anyone can help me.


I currently have a Red Scarlet X and Red Pro 5" monitor (touch version, don't know if others exist).


I'm on the fence of getting a Red One (non MX), but could you help with some questions?


1)
Will my Red Pro 5" monitor work with Red One? And would touch functions work as well?

And the cable I'm using for the monitor with my Scarlet (Red's proprietary cable), will that cable work with R1?


2)
It is fully compatible with all 1.8 Redmags, once the ssd module is installed?


3)
Is it really safe to buy? I'm looking at a 1500 hours camera, and I've heard Red Ones are prone to brick themselves quite easily. And are quite buggy...

I'm unsure about how reliable it is, not IQ.

IQ itself is pretty great, that is a given.

In answer to your question,


1) Monitor Compatibility

Yes, your RED Pro 5" will display image on RED ONE.

No, touch features won’t work.

Yes, same LCD/EVF cable should work if it’s RED’s proprietary one.

2) SSD Compatibility

Yes, fully compatible with 1.8" REDMAGs if SSD module is installed.

Best to stick with 64GB or smaller for stability.

3) Reliability

Risky. 1500 hours is high.

Known for random issues, bricking
, and no official support.




In my professional opinion, you should only consider buying the RED ONE (non-MX) if:

You want it for nostalgic or experimental purposes, not critical commercial work.

You understand and are prepared for quirky behavior, slow boot times, and possible failures.

The price is low enough to justify the risk (less than $1000 is reasonable, especially if it comes with accessories).

You’re not relying on touchscreen monitor functionality.

You’re okay with limited support and parts availability.

It's okay for hobby use, but not professional use.

Yeah, it's just for a hobby filmmaking project, which I plan on doing a few short films all shot on Red (already got a Scarlet X and Raven), and the Red One would join mostly because of the mystique.

You know, that special feeling of using a camera Hollywood actually shot big budget movies on.


Most of its quirks are non-issues for me, like slow boot times, weird menu system, it eats light and batteries for breakfast (more on that in a moment), and so on.


The part that really scares me is if it bricks itself out of nowhere.


I'm in Brazil, and considering our weak currency and unfair taxes, the kit will get to my door for aproximately 10k BRL. Yup, 1.300 USD = 10.000 BRL.


So if it bricks, even if not my main camera and not pro work, it will be a very bad week for me, having it transformed into a door stop.


Now, regarding batteries, I assume it eats far more batteries than either the Scarlet X and Raven.


It seems the package comes with a wall power adapter.

I've never used one, but can I just assume once it's plugged to the wall and to the camera's power in port, it will just work flawlessly?


I mean, no additional adapter is required in the pipeline?

The question is kinda dumb, but all I've ever used are V mount batteries, and a wall power adapter seems very reasonable in this case.



Well, it's kinda risky, but I think I'll order it tomorrow.

‎On the RED ONE Bricking Risk

‎Totally valid fear — it's the one real Achilles heel.

‎Most RED ONEs brick due to power-related failures: abrupt shutdowns, faulty SSD modules, bad batteries, or hot-swapping.

‎Just be very cautious and never pull power or remove media without shutting down properly.

‎If you use it mostly on stable AC power, you’re already reducing risk.



‎Now, about the Wall Power Adapter

‎Not a dumb question at all — here's the deal:

‎If it's a genuine RED AC Power Adapter (typically a big brick with a 4-pin XLR out), it should plug directly into the RED ONE’s 4-pin XLR power input.

‎Yes, once plugged in, the camera will run fine — no extra adapter needed.

‎Just double-check:

‎That it’s 12V or 14V, 10A or higher (RED ONE draws a lot of current).

‎The plug is standard 4-pin XLR, and not reversed polarity (center = +, outer = –).


‎You might want to test wall power with a multimeter or use a known-safe plug before trusting it fully.


‎In practice: you can shoot all day on wall power, and it’s a smart move to avoid burning through V-mounts. Great for indoor scenes or interviews.



‎On Cost in Brazil

‎Yeah, I get it — the 10k BRL sting is real. That's a lot of feijão for something that could fail out of nowhere. You’re approaching it wisely though:

‎Not your only camera

‎Hobby use

‎You understand the risks

‎But still excited


‎It’s one of those “heart over head” choices — and those can lead to some of the most passionate filmmaking moments.



‎If you’d like, I can whip up a checklist of things to ask the seller or test once it arrives — to catch issues early and reduce risk.

Your reply was so close to bringing a tear to my eyes, I know it sounds corny, but it really did! Got emotional for real.

It's my first day here at Reduser.net, and I already got more heart and enthusiasm from your replies than I did in the past year from my actors. lol :D


Just an example: when I acquired my Scarlet X about a year ago, I exchanged some messages with the leading actor with the most insane hype, like "hey man, that's a real cinema camera right here! Hollywood would have used such cameras just a few years ago, that's pure epicness!!"

To which he replied "oh... uh... okay?...".

Haha man, such a bummer talking with people that doesn't understand how fascinating cinema cameras, and Red, are.

My previous stuff was all shot in consumer grade stuff, like Panny GH4, and I feel beyond honored to use Red cameras now.


I'm also really glad with those tips, I'd have never guessed the AC power is the 12v port.

I'd have looked for the larger port, meant for the battery.

Great to know it's not that one.


There're 2 ports on the left back side, both marked as "Aux 12v", any one of those is ok? Just 1 at a time right?


Also, it's awesome to know cutting power abruptly is so dangerous, now I know it must be hooked up to a UPS at the wall, in case of energy failure.

3 of them will be shot on Red (accross these various models), and the F900r takes on the 4th one.

‎On the RED ONE’s Power Ports

‎Great question — here’s the simple breakdown:

‎The RED ONE has two AUX 12V power inputs on the back left side — one is usually labeled DC Power or AUX 12V, and one might say DC-IN.

‎Only use ONE at a time — they're the same line, just duplicated.

‎Use a standard 4-pin XLR (female) to camera cable from a wall power supply.

‎Voltage should be between 11V–17V, but 12V–14V is ideal.

‎YES, plugging it into a UPS is brilliant — you’re avoiding one of the biggest brick risks: power loss mid-write.


‎So yep — just plug into either AUX 12V port (one at a time), and you’re good to go.
