  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Vintage Emulation Lens: Meet The Canon V35

Cool idea but the K35s never felt that "vintage" to me whereas here I see more veiling flare. The FD L lenses and K35s are actually pretty sharp with adequate contrast wide open and I feel like the Sumires overshoot in terms of spherical aberration wide open and these seem to overshoot in terms of veiling flare.

I could be totally wrong, I can't afford K35s.

Still waiting for the 28mm f1.8 Canon to earn its rightful place in the pantheon.

I kinda liked the look of the K35's because they didn't look all that vintage and more modern instead. However, I think Domenic and his team did a really good job of trying to provide a unique vintage like feel to these V35 lenses. I think I might be the only one who still prefers the clinical sharpest of a Zeiss Master Prime or Master Anamorphic lens over somewhat softer rendering lenses.
 
I think Roger Deakins does too. Lamb looked good and that was Master Anamorphic. I think you need good production design and nice lighting (or just a great location) to want to go for some thing so clean but there is noting wrong with that look imo.

Maybe I'm off base but these just seem to have more veiling flare than I remember FDs and K35s having.

Yeah I just like that Master Anamorphic look. I think Domenic and his team were maybe going after their own general impression of the look from the K35s.

I think it's like when you see a film with a look you love that used a certain lens and you try to replicate that look. But later you may come to realize that the look of that film you loved from that lens may not have been solely the character of that specific lens but maybe other less tangible contributing factors as well.

So you try to recreate that lense's look inherent properties along with those less tangible properties into one lens design the best way that you can.

to me this looks like a hipster-magic. V35 dont look like K35, to me this looks like overly filtered stylization. it would be interested to put V35 head to head with CN-e with set of filters to choice (Glimmer glass and BPM) form and see how hard is to dial in that special magic that they talk about.
 
Hey all. Domenic here. One of the creators of the V35 project. I can assure you it is a lot more than hipster magic. We've partnered with one of the best lens mod companies in the business and have spent a year plus developing the looks of these lenses. It's important to note we were never trying to do a 1:1 replication of the k35's. Think of it as a reimagining to eliminate a lot of the negatives of the k35's. We were just at cinegear with smashing success. So much so that Canon themselves gave us insane props for creating something really incredible. Some of you are right and there is more veiling glare, We wanted to give people the option of something MORE vintage feeling than the K35's, but if you slap a mattebox on it's all fully controllable. Was a fine line to dance with characteristics to add. But we will be uploading a new reel shortly with what we showed at Cinegear. We really think you'll like them if you can find them to try. We kept the best of vintage canon and the most amazing parts of modern lenses to create something unique and affordable.
