  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ATA Cases

I didnt intend for this case to be used as a carry-on case. Its not normal to "carry-on" 35mm packages and our productions with RED will be very similar.

Just want to make sure that there's no misunderstanding. I'm not talking about carry-on luggage. I'm talking about "checkable" luggage. Luggage that's checked in at the check-in desk to go as cargo. That is now restricted to 66lbs per case. If it's over that it has to be shipped as freight. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear and I also apologies if this was actually meant as talking about "carry on" luggage.

No problem Fred, all the input is appreciated thats why I went with Mikes suggestion to put the second level in the lid. Hopefully this will reduce the weight to 66lbs, at least thats my goal. I sent the drawings to Encore, so I will know soon.

Thanks for the input, its exactly why I posted this here.

Digital, any word on these custom built cases. Also was wondering how current owners are hauling around RED and accessories. We got a few weeks and we're into the new year. Before you know it RED cameras will be everywhere. These cases are some of the few tasks left before completing my package.

Hey,

not a red owner or every actually been on a 35mm set but....

Just a thought..probably a bit late now, but instead of a hinge you could have some sort of scissor like lift that would allow you to move the top level up and to the side, kinda like whats in a tool box. That would mean that you could have access to everything. Dunno if it would be as durable, and it would mean that the top level would need some kind of solid base, and you would loose a couple of cm off two sides.

Looks great! They did a fine job.

I'm going to be calling them for my 400mm 2.8 and MB-20.

Nice case but I would suggest a hunk of foam and a riptie strap to hold those rods in place. You don't want them bouncing all over the place. I like that well in back which allows for some expansion of the kit in the future.

We finally got in our system kits for the Phantom cameras. 62 ibs. fully loaded. Just under the weight limit!

Yes, I just stuck them in there for the photos, but I plan on cutting a piece of foam for the back section. I actually looking for a tube to store them in.

I was going for 65lbs...but couldnt get there. If I leave out some of the extra parts I can get it down if needed. Most of the time I ship cargo anyway, because I have so many cases.

Honestly I will probably use this case more locally and build a second case for flight thats two separate cases.

Mitch,

Who do you guys use for Abel's cases? A&J?

We mostly use A&J, although for a few things we use Innerspace. We generally like the A&J latches, but they'll make cases with any of the standard type latches you wish.

We're a dealer for A&J as well, so if anyone would like to get cases we can help you out. They are quite possibly the absolute nicest people with whom I have ever done business.

Very nice case. Nice work, it's very nice and neat! Don't you get it down to around 66lbs if you take the RED with you as "carry on"? With todays waiting list if you loose your RED camera I wouldn't leave it from my side.

Very nice Greg. If its that heavy maybe some wheels would have been a nice addition.

I'll probably go with two cases. One for body, evf, monitor and its cables and aks and a second for the rest of the aks and batteries etc.

Nice work though. I agree about Janet and the folks at A&J being really friendly and good to do business with.

Were you able to give them specs or did you take your package there for them to lay it out?

Regards,
Danny

Hi Greg!

First congratulations on a great case design. I'm very impressed!

Any chance of you sharing the drawings/measurements for the foam?
I do realise all the work you've done, so it would be very generous of you to share with the community and very much appreciated from all of us!

Best regards
Marcus

Hey Marcus,
Yes I do plan on posting the drawings asap...just been a bit overloaded lately. They are coming soon, I just need to correct some mistakes first.
