So I was thinking. The distinction between Directors of Photography, and Cinematographers, is that one shoots on video, while the other shoots on film. Well, since RED is neither film nor video, should we have a different title for RED users? Something such as a Redtographer? Maybe someone can come up with a better name, but that also got me thinking to other fields. Here are some of the names that popped into my head...

Redirector
Redtographer
Reditor
Reduction Manager (RM)
Redactor
Assistant Red Op.

anyways, im gonna hit the sack cause i'm dead tired. Have fun all.

Yep, sleep is a good thing...

Well not true, both terms existed before video. From Wikipedia:

A cinematographer is one photographing with a motion picture camera (the art and science of which is known as cinematography). The title is generally equivalent to director of photography (DP or DoP), used to designate a chief over the camera and lighting crews working on a film, responsible for achieving artistic and technical decisions related to the image. The cinematographer is sometimes also the camera operator. The term cinematographer has been a point of contention for some time now; some professionals insist that it only applies when the director of photography and camera operator are the same person, although this is far from being uniformly the case. To most, cinematographer and director of photography are interchangeable terms.

I don't think film or video plays into the meanings at all. moving pictures is moving pictures no mater what imaging technology it is.

I agree with this. I've always thought of my occupation as a "cinematographer." My title is "director of photography." That's shiny enough nomenclature for me. No need for another title.

I've always distinguished it as:

A director of photography figures out the lighting design, supervises lighting the scene, actively chooses the camera angles and coverage that will be shot for the scene, and ensures that each take is good on the technical side.

A cinematographer does the same thing, but in this case it is the director who decides where to put the camera and how to cover the scene, and the cinematographer is charged with artistically lighting the designated angles and ensuring that the takes are technically good.

So the way I distinguish between them depends on where the majority of the shot choices are coming from.

Huh? Is this view a widely spread one in the USA? As far as I know the two terms are used interchangeably. It's called the ASC, but many members are credited as Director of Photography.

Sorry, I was lead to believe that they were somewhat different. Just a silly thought I guess :p.

How about don't drink and start new threads on Reduser.net. You wake up the next morning with both a headache and the net equivalent of a shameful STD which is to to say a silly thread like this one... :spidy:

Personally I dig "freelance Yak masturbator", or "junior assistant hamster wrangler".

They just ooze "power", don't you find?
