I tried to find the answer to this and I am both technically challenged and impatient to search for four hours.

I am RED #1900 and I am going with a S16 lens and will shoot all my stuff 2k. I am going to Visual Products next week to look at lenses, etc. How does the sensor work with S16? Is it cropped or does it only record on that size when 2k is selected? Does any of this play into lens selection. What is 2k scaled? Just want to be educated when I talk to VP about lenses.

With a Super 16 lens, you have to select the 2K windowed option. You are only recording from the center of the sensor. See the chart http://www.red.com/cameras/format_options

With 2K scaled, you shoot with 35mm lenses and the camera scales down the 4K image to 2K, in camera.

I just shot a couple of days of 2K with my RED One and a Canon S16 10.6-180 zoom that i rented from Otto Nemenz. The 2k is a center crop of the sensor. Super 16 lenses cover this area perfectly. I primarily shot in 2K because I wanted to shoot 48 frames a second. I was very happy with the results.

Just to confirm with 2k scaled, for now red runs max 30fps, that's correct?

Anyone with a Red One care to shoot a rez chart in the 2K windowed mode?

How was the sharpness and contrast on the Canon 10.6-180 zoom compared to primes?

Hi,

2K windowed will be the favourit mode for EFP and doc filmmaker. We will shoot a lot with S16 lenses, all the documentary stuff. I like the S16 route better than the B4 route, simply there is no need for any adaptor and I can use lenses I know and like.

For people on budget I highly recommend the Canon 8-64 as a very versatile lens to start with. It's not build anymore but there are quite a few out there waiting to work with RED ONE. 6-8k for a good one is the price one has to pay. Very interesting is the Angenieux 7-81HR (haven't shot with it yet) but you get it only new, I suppose.

I haven't shot with the other Canon S16 since I found 10.8 mm for a beginning focal length too long for my taste, assuming you are looking for a every day lens. Same with the Zeiss 12-120.
You can mix the Canon 8-64 with Zeiss High-Speeds, it's pretty sharp.

The Canon 8-64 is a great lens, especially the mk2. I have one for my S16 kit, and I love it. There are also 7-63 and 6.6-66 incarnations that came later, but the 8-64 is the fastest and holds stop through the whole range. This is the lens I plan to use with my RED for documentary production. I recommend it.

Actually the 8-64mm Canon is bit older version of the newer twins, the 7-63mm and 11-165mm. The advantage of the later ones is the focus ring respectively it's scale. While the 8-64mm is bit difficult for pulling focus in the range between 2 to 5 meters of distance, cause those positions at the scale are too close each other; the later two ones are perfect in this case.

Also the 8-64mm isn't perfectly sharp when wide open is zoomed out to 8mm.

Hi,

The 2K window, or cropped the option available today will work great with the S16 lens

You asked about 2K scaled- that will be a different story. That´s the full 4K field of view scalled and downsampled to 2K, that is supposed to be able to go up to 60fps in the near future. You will experience some difficulty with some S16 lenses if you try the scaled option, I do understand a few S16 lenses do cover the full S35 sensor- can´t recall which ones.
