Looking for feedback from anyone who's been shooting with the 18-85.

I'm aware of the support issue, filter situation etc. Really want to know how you feel about the quality of the lens visually and mechanically.

From what I've read so far, and posted tests, it seems like a good match to Ultra Primes in terms of a look. Care to comment? What do you love? What do you wish for? Any complaints?

Thanks!

M

Works nice for us. Very good optics, sort of good mechanically, alittle more drag in the focus ring then many other optics. But I have just used one red 18-85, maybe others are different.

Superb lens. Support issue for us was taken care of by using the OptiTek adaptor ring. Works great. Filter situation is no problem, it's 18mm at the wide end so we use our regular Redrock MicroMatteBox which I filed away slightly to get it to fit, but Brian Valente has graciously sent me an updated model to review which I will do as soon as I get it, which is supposed to fit perfectly with no modification.

I'd also add very good mechanically as well.

HTH!

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Anyone else? Any footage out there?

Just letting people know that Duclos Lenses also offers a support for the RED 18-85. I'm sure that the Optitek unit works great as well. Duclos also makes a replacement front cap for the lens because the original one flexes and can touch the front element.

Disclaimer: You can buy Duclos Lenses products from Abel, or you can purchase direct from the manufacturer.

I think the lens has some problems as they have not shipped any after that first batch. They said 50 lens per month and I am in the second batch but have not heard anything.

Huh? I haven't heard anything. I've been keeping up with this lens. Anyone else....

Hey Mitch, what's the price on the replacement lens cap? I agree that the Red one is too flexible and touches the lens occasionally!

PM me if you can't say publicly.

Cheers from Japan,

Paul

Thanks for the info Paul, I already have Optitek's support bracket which works fine.

$95 seems a touch expensive for a lens cap, but I'll think about it anyway :)

Cheers,

Paul

Yep lenscap can touch front element, and sins the lenscap have a small spike in the middle after the plastic mold, it is not great to have that going arround on the surface of the lens. When we got the lens it was on packed in some liquid foam, and not sure how good this was in combination with flexing lenscap. On ouer lens there may even be some coating damage due to this. Very small, but still a mark.

As I've said many times in this forum, I don't like to solicit or plug services or products.
But since a lot of people here agree that the cap on the 18-85mm is less than perfect, I would like to extend a limited discount to REDUSERS.

For the rest of January, call or email DuclosLenses to get our RED 18-85mm Solid Delrin Front Cap for $75.
Just remember to mention that Matthew Duclos sent you. :)

Optically how do images from the Red Pro 18-85mm compare to Optimo or Cooke zoom lenses aside focal length differences ?

Dave

Just to let everyone know, as a proud distributor of Duclos Lenses products, Abel Cine Tech will also honor the $75 price for these Delrin lens caps for the month of January, 2009.

Hi Mark
We tried to test a 18-85mm lens on our F35 today. The flange was to thick to fit in the PL mount. Im told Arri make the PL mount on the camera for Sony.
I guess this qualifies as real world test experience.
The 18-50mm fit just fine. Looked pretty good as well.

Thanks John,

I'd only use it on my Red, but good to know. I assume your Ultra's mount just fine if Arri designed the F35 mount.
