Is it possible to control the record tally lights? Sometimes the light is reflected in the subject and it would be useful to be able to turn it off... anyone know if there is a way?

thanks

obviously, but not always a viable solution. i ask because it's a simple matter on many video viewfinders and has been useful in the past. Not a big deal but I would like to have the option...

No, it's not, as far as I'm aware - what Brent said...

Would be good if it could be easily added though, especially for documentary work.

I second that request.
Black tape works, but being able to just switch it off would be nicer.

But hey, it's a good sign if we're down to asking for this kind of small details...

While we're at it, a back tally would be nice for Epic and Scarlet, if that's possible. This way we would avoid the reflection issues...

can we take it then that the front tally is at least sometimes a problem... let's think about the circumstances in which a front tally is actually useful - a tally light that is visible mainly to the Talent and I guess any crew that might be forward of the lens. Most of the time that would probably be in a live broadcast situation - don't think Red One is quite suited to that. For documentary work or for BCUs I think it's a disadvantage and I would prefer not to have it at all. However I recognise there may be circumstances in which some people might want it - but I bet more people would rather not have it there. So stating the obvious of black tape is all very well but not necessary. It doesn't look good on a cool looking camera like the Red One to have to stick bits of tape on the front of it.
Let me pose the question another way - would you really be calling for it to be there if it wasn't?

Tally Light

Making it programmable is a good point Peter. But meanwhile, gaffer tape is the best work around.

Peter we get your point. Tally is very important, so just everyone knows the camera is rolling or not. Sometimes, a lot actually, the record button is hit too quickly and the cam won't start recording, or stop after a take. It's happened many times someone shouted "the camera's still rolling!" after cut was called, thus leaving you with an annoying 15 minute take if a break was called then (and especially if you shoot on drive) Or worse, someone would shout "Wait! The camera's not rolling!" because the 1st AC was wearing thick glove on a cold shoot... So in my book, a tally is essential. I don't make docos, but I know it must scare weasels and bugs (not taking the piss), but gaffer is a common place on a shoot. My Red is litteraly 98% covered with gaffer tape on any shoot. Notes here, cables color codes there, hiding unused sound plugs or protecting other parts from dust or else... I disagree on the fact it doesn't look cool. There's nothing cooler for me than an all gaffered Red... I'm sure if there's a switcher in the EVF tally that can be trigered via menu they can do it. Else, well, tape (I know you hate that). But tally is vital for most of us. It's the only way to know the shot is safely recorded. Maybe someone can make you a nice black cap to cover the front of your EVF, like a lens cap like thing, to allow you to preserve the slickness of the Red. I've also see a lot of guys put a black sock on it! Pretty cool to protect it in outdoor situations I think... But you won't like the look...
