I have great success using my RED ONE for many years (early adopter camera #941) and have appreciated the fact that the camera has always been upward compatible (upgrade of audio board, MX chip, firmware upgrades). I just installed Firmware 32 and now find that I cannot use the full potential of the camera because my present medium, CF cards, will not capture full 4.5K. The SSD cards capable of doing this are readily available but I cannot find the SSD module to run them in my RED ONE. I’m told that RED discontinued the module even though it is still available for the Scarlet and Epic. I’ve tried Rreduser market, Ebay and google search but no module to be had. My camera has been fitted out with RED components over the years and allowed me to use my camera to it’s full potential. Is there any module, medium, or work around that will let me record the high end recording capability of build 32? The discontinuance of the RED ONE SSD module is the first time I’ve encountered a contradiction to the upward compatibility mantra.

Hi Ralph,

I will work with your rep see if we have one in reserve that we can part with.

Sorry to hear about this development.
I never imagined that part had such a limited run to the point it would cease being sold by RED.
That was a part that I always planned to upgrade to and with trusty RED Drives getting old it makes a bit of
sense to do this.

Michael, it would be greatly appreciated if you might be able to source another SSD module as I know this is a part I will also need.

I don't have any need for one, but considering the number of older Red One M/MXs out there with the old CF modules that may well want to upgrade to SSD at some point in the future, it seems like a module that should remain available for some time yet.

Yeah, me 3. I was planning to upgrade when the drives no longer were a viable option. One of two has already died. With the module gone it looks like I may be out of luck. Should have kept the SSD module for a while longer. RED One may be gone from the store, but there are still plenty of them in service today that only have the CF module, like mine.

Probably the single most important upgrade I did for my R1, besides MX upgrade. Different camera when you don't have to have the big drive hanging off of it, yet when you get into a situation where you need ample storage (long interviews) you can go back to the hard drive for 320 or 640 GB configs. Very versatile solution. Don't miss CF module at all.

I am also planning to upgrade my Red One to use SSDs. I use the Red One along side with our Epic X cameras in Deep Atom for making of films and for some jobs. It would be a crying shame to suddenly be cashed up for future projects and find we can't upgrade our Red One to take SSD and do the sensor upgrade.

Hi Ralph,

I will work with your rep see if we have one in reserve that we can part with.

Shooting round the clock and just about to get some sleep but wanted to post a long overdue Thank You to Michael and our Bomb Squad rep Jay who just one day after posting our problem found us a new RED ONE SSD side module. It was delivered two days after we ordered it from RED. We’ve found RED SSD cards and readers are readily available both as a purchase and local rental but we would not be shooting our film with our RED One if we hadn’t obtained the module. We greatly appreciate your help .

Just wanted to do a plus 1 on this issue. We had planned on upgrading our R1 and now that we're finally ready to pull the trigger, the part is discontinued. The thing that surprises me about this is that along with the SSD module, we were going to purchase RedMags as well, along with the RedMag stations, so a decent purchase that we're no longer able to make. Very disappointed with Red about this.

If nothing else, would like to see some effort made by Red to support third party, large capacity CF cards so the R1 owners aren't completely out of luck in regards to recording options. I still really like the look of the R1, shame if we can't find a way to keep in going.

This is a big problem, i am currently looking to invest in a RED One and the possibility of not being able to upgrade to a SSD Module is really making it hard to make a decision. If RED put the SSD module back up for Sale it would make investing in a BT RED ONE a easy decision for someone looking to move up from smaller HD cameras.

I thought the company had told everyone that "Obsolescence was Obsolete"?

This is on the list guys, we are looking into it. If you have already please let your Reps know so we can put you a list to contact when we have them available.

If you are considering investing in a RED One why not just wait and look for a seller who is selling one with a SSD module intact? When BT RED ONE's were sold they were in both CF and SSD versions. If you are buying a resold camera then just wait till a buyer is ready to unload the SSD version. You make it sound like RED is still selling a BT RED ONE directly and only offering a CF version with no option to add an SSD.

After looking for a good condition, second hand RED ONE for the past two months in the UK. 80% of them are CF or RED Drive models. If RED Sold the SSD module it would make buying up a CF or version a no brainer.
