Has anybody done any freelensing or lens whacking with their RED?

I do it all the time with my 5D and DSLRs, just not sure if it would be safe with the RED sensor. Or even if RED allows you to record without a lens attached.

Thoughts?

Was unfamiliar with the term but after looking it up, sure, why couldn't you do it with a RED? You have the issue of introducing dust into any DSLR type camera that has a sensor, but beyond that, don't see how it would hurt the camera. Looks like fun!

Red cameras will record fine without a lens.

The only thing to be careful of is the data pins in the mount - might be worth covering them with some low tack Scotch tape to avoid any possibility of shorting them if you are really putting the lens in at an angle.

Done it a bit with my red one... Worked well.

When I got our epics I wondered about creating a lens mount (or non mount more accurately) that's purpose was to protect the OLPF etc from dust and damage but allowed me to reach infinity with a lens in my hand.. Never got round to it as I have number of tilt lens which I use instead... That said free lensing offered much more than tilt and shift. The opportunities to part flash the sensor to create other organic feeling effects is under exploited in my opinion.

Good luck

sorry to revive an old thread but what lenses have people used? I know having an exit Diameter of the lens smaller than the mount aperature of the Camera is key, And I know from doing this with my old Canons that different lenses produce different results... just curious what peole used.

Extreme lens whacking: I took a dremel to a Holga and chopped the lens off. Made a rail mount that holds the Holga lens on a spring. Whacked away. Very very pretty. Client sat there with his jaw on his chest saying "beautiful!"

Seriously. Show us those beautiful shots. I'm curious as well!

If you want something similar, but rather have your sensor stay dust free, grab a lens baby:

they offer them in PL mount since a while now, too:

The lensbaby is a tilt lens so you'll end up with similar looks, but of course you don't get the light leaks and some looks will always only be achievable through free lensing.

Yes please, do share if possible.
Also maybe of your DIY kit you built.

Doh! OK - this was the very first music vid I ever shot (T2i), very quickly tossed off, first time I ever opened after effects, etc... the holga shots should be very apparent. On an APS-C sensor you don't get all the Holga-ness you would on a full frame. But it's very handy to whack on a spring.
