  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dragon / Epic / Scarlet Camera Beta Build 5.1.23

Ok I understand now. I thought from Mark's post that you could choose the max. value for the quiet mode when recording.

Pat

Pat - yeah ... they shouldn't have made a "adaptive preview quiet record" mode and a "quiet" mode as people are already confusing them - but trust me - you want adaptive preview quiet record - we have a show shooting in very small sets with mics super close to the camera and a director rolling 5 minutes takes with fast resets - and this mode is working fantastic. Everyone on the set is impressed. Set the target temp to the temp you blackshaded - lower max fan speed on record to 25% - works like fine wine.

Since the firmware is labeled DSMC firmware instead of the previous name of Epic X firmware, I would like to know if this somehow enables features above and beyond just making movies? I know some have had trouble attributed to the last beta version so it's important to know if this has features that one would find useful for movie-making.

And, if someone could clarify... is DSMC firmware the only thing going forward or will there be upgrades to what has been know in the past as Epic X firmware?

Nothing has changed, I'm not sure what you are referring to.

Is it that the Operations Guide is now combined (Epic/Scarlet/Dragon) and is using the generic DSMC moniker instead?

Trent, it's just that on the RED website I noticed Beta version 5.1.23 is listed as DSMC Build. Lower down the list the March beta version is referred to as Epic Build 4 v4.0.9.

Just was wondering if this firmware had taken on special Stills qualities that might distinguish it from something more attuned to video.

Cool. Eager to test it out.

No, nothing has changed other than naming conventions used on the website/operations guide.

Speaking of target temperature - anyone have advice on an optimal temp for the MX sensor to get the best noise performance? Assuming that backshading is done at that temp, of course. I know Dragon is better at hotter temps (I think I read that here...) but what's the sweet spot for MX?

Also curious about stills mode, as Elsie N mentioned. Still some tricks in the works for that, eventually? Looking forward to seeing what the RED team comes up with for that =)

This stuff is fantastic. Keep up the good work!!

Mark is the with the (bottom & top of the) fan 2.0 kit? Also what target fan temp do you have it set to?

Great!
I'm just having a black shading problem. I'm on 4kws 24 fps, when the blackshading starts it automatically chenges to 12fps.
Tried a few times, still hapenning, anyone?

Scarlet?

Since the black shading is for the entire sensor it runs at a max 12fps.

Trent, you are the man, thanks a lot brother!
It's unbeliveable how fast you guys work!
Yes, Scalert.
I guess I just never noticed before!
Thanks again my friend!

Trent, another thing, I'm using adaptive preview quiet record. Everything is fine on preview. As soon as I hit record the fan goes down to 30, as I set. The problem is, when I stop recording, the fan doesn't kick in and the temperature raises very quickly and doesn't stop raising, i have to manually adjust the fan. What should I do?

The sweet spot for M-X is 50-65 deg. Depending on your working environment.
Check the last 5.0 beta firmware thread about it. Afaik it's been discussed there.

Trent, any news on that? It's still hapenning. It's really scary.
Shoul I send a log file?

What temperatures are you seeing? Adaptive mode will be very quiet until the camera gets up to temperature. I have a feeling you are not used to how quiet adaptive mode is.

Trent, the thing is, I set the adaptive quiet record to 30% while recording and 50 as target temperature. Turn on the camera, it gets to 50 and stay there, everything is normal and fans are running fine.
When I hit record, fans stop making noise cause they are down to 30%, everything is normal.
when I stop recording, I still can't hear the fans and the temperature starts to climb and don't stop. 52, 55, 60, 65 and the fans don't kick in. It will get hot to the point the camera will turn itself off.
