No the tornado thing (which is really weird looking) rotates freely so you can ratchet the focus. Interesting idea but yea... REALLY ugly.So with the Tornado thingy you pull focus by twisting your wrist and then you have to stay in that awkward pose for the remainder of the shot? Would be far more handy if the handle was power and it had a pressure sensitive rocker switch.
I THINK that it's not like a real ratchet... you have to use your thumb on the ff wheel to change focus position, the tornado thing just turns freely so you can release the ff wheel and rotate back to a more comfortable position. The video shows basically how that works.Hmm, but then surely if you're ratcheting you can't move it back in the same take?

It looks like a good, cheap solution, but boy do they make the ugliest gear on the planet.
Yep, and that's one of the big challenges with the smaller cameras of today, especially ones that aren't really designed with a camera operator in mind. For some things, the small form factor works really well but for other things it makes you long for someone to just put the sensor and I/O into a camera body meant for the job. But, that's why there are options out there, something for everyone.Cannot see how this system will work with matte boxes.
LOL @ everyone describing the other focus controller as "Tornado thingy".
Anyway the link to the Cinema5D site with the pics of the HDLSR with all that stuff hanging off it caused me to reflect....are people still doing that with DLSRs ?
P.S. Fully kitted it does look like "the Borg" designed it.
Although it looks a bit odd, I'd say for single operators this thing wins hands down for ergonomics.
