Help!

Please can someone help me get sound on the RED EPIC to work?? I connected a mic on the mic1 socket. I can hear it work on the headset fine.

But no sound on playback, not even on edit suite..

What are the settings to activate sound recording for a normal sennheiser mke 300 mic with 3.5 jack ?

Its not for using, just to help me sync so i wont have to keep using a slate..

THanks!!!

I don't know if this is your issue, but I always carry a stereo->mono adapter. The Epic doesn't like stereo 3.5mm plugs and won't record sound. Add in a $2 mono adapter and I haven't had any problems since.

If I remember correctly, the MKE 300 shares the same wiring configuration as the MKE 400.

Since the mic was catering to the DSLR market, Sennheiser has the Tip and Ring wired the same as mic L and mic L, with the sleeve = Ground.
So both Tip and Ring carry the same, left channel signal.

For Scarlet and EPIC cameras, the audio connector pins are listed as T-R = mic + (positive) & - (negative) with the sleeve = ground.

Originally, Sennheiser acknowledged that the "problem is likely because of the dual mono wiring (in their mic design). A stereo to mono 1/8" adapter may be the solution."
Problem is with the Sennheiser design, not the camera.

Unfortunately, another communication from them stated that their suggested solution would not work and they were going to investigate further. That was a while back and they have since reorganized some personnel.

Might be best to remind them about this issue. Try to get in contact with:

Thanks so much guys.. but i should have said, my sennheiser jack was cut out and replaced because for a time I had it changed to a XLR tip then back again to a jack tip (homemade).. but it is a mono jack (one bar) and it works fine on my T2i .. also, the Mic sound comes in fine on my headset so the mic sound is going in.. for some reason its just recording picture.. :(

The T2i is a DSLR.

The wiring issue with the Sennheiser does not happen at the jack, it happens in the microphone itself.
Which is why Sennheiser said it could not be solved easily by an adapter.

Why you would monitor sound in headphones but not record it is a different question that I do not know the answer to.
Anyone else?

Just to be absolutely clear, are you monitoring sound out of the head phone jack on the Epic? And you are hearing sound?

If so, are you seeing the sound monitor bars on the lower right of the LCD registering an audio signal? If not (and you probably aren't, I'd guess) you have to go to MENU>>SETTINGS>>AUDIO>>AUIDIO CHANNELS And activate the sound recording. Source will normally be CAM ANALOG and the MODE BALANCED / UNBALANCED. You can activate PHANTOM POWER per your needs.

If you have done all that, you may also have to back out of the menu to AUDIO CONTROL and up your pre-amp gain to get a strong enough signal to record.

Did I miss anything? :-)

Thanks so much!! yes i will try it..

Yeah im monitoring with the headphone jack on the red epic, confirming that the mic input is getting live sound going in.. just not recording it.

Ill try what you guys suggested.. will be great to be able to get sound no matter how noisy from the fan.. just to be able to sync quicker..

might even get a tiny cheap 3.5mm pen mic with no wire that sticks out of the mic1 jack..

Jorge - have a look at this thread regarding a scratch mic - http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...Mic-for-Red-Scarlet-or-Epic-tested-amp-works!

Yep it was on varispeed.. now it works with my sennheiser mk300 but not my pen mic because it has no power. Its a small 3v powered pen mic that takes power from mp3 recorders ect..

The Epic can only supply +48Vdc phantom power intended for professional condenser microphones - it will not work with your pen mic.

Was the problem that you didn't know audio is not recorded in varispeed mode or you didn't know you were in varispeed mode? Accidentally being in variapeed has much worse implications. Namely, not playing back at the same rate captured.

Yep.. I was accidentally in varispeed mode lol even when chosing 24fps it stayed on varispeed until I set it on the redmote instead. .

But yes my pen mic wont work.. ill get one that does.. dont want my sennheiser mk300 hanging from ky epic just for sync sound :)

The frame rate on the top bar is the current sensor capture rate. You need to make sure you change your project rate (also known as Time Base). Please see page 64 of the 4.0.x Epic Operation Guide for more details.

I have a Scarlet X and had no audio coming in at all. Not even thru the headset. Reading this Thread i figured out how to turn of the VARISPEED. Whatever the hell that is... and bam i have audio going thru. I can record and hear live. Thank you Thread.
