Should I buy RED SSDs now?

Having a low Stage2 number I'm thinking about buying SSD#s now.
But OTOH experience tought me to NEVER buy media before I actually need it.

But maybe they will get backordered and I'll have a NomediaEpic....

What to do?

even for r1 productions, SSD's are a absolute blessing. it's better in literally every way. no resolution or FR limitations of a CF, recording time of a red raid. solid state reliability, and offload speeds alone will save you tons of time on set doing backups. wish the technology was there to have this when r1 FIRST came out.

Buy at least one SSD, EPIC-Xs are around the corner and then RED will sell them like hot cakes. Maybe they will get backordered soon. I bought one 256 SSD, best bang for the buck, and will buy another 256 SSD.

I'm sure RED are well aware of the issues here. I understand why they had to go for a robust custom design for the SSD media, but it does make for potential supply issues; I have an aversion to being dependent on a single source for anything more than is absolutely necessary. Cameras without freely available media would be a disaster and I'm sure RED are more than smart enough to avoid that! Until third party alternatives become available RED SSD is the *only* game in town for EPIC and that makes me nervous.
