I've noticed a lack of Canon-mount REDs while looking for a used setup. Is there a reason for this beyond personal preference?

most people already had investments in PL glass form the days of their Red Ones.. Most of the Cannon mount cameras are from those people who bought directly into the DSMC world. If you buy a used camera with a PL mount, you can always buy a Canon Al mount from Red directly and have both mounts. This will open up many new lens options for you.

For Red Ones, there was only one third party "smart" mount, from Birger Engineering, which shipped in any quantities. Canon EF mounts need to be "smart" to allow changing of aperture on the lenses. They weren't cheap and due to unfortunate lack of communications they weren't fully approved by Red for use on the Red Ones, and so they voided any warranty on your Red Ones if they were fitted after a certain date.

However they did work well, and if your camera warranty was expired then they could be fitted with care. Backfocus adjustment was very fiddly too.

There were a couple of dumb Canon mounts around, but not in proper production amounts.

Presently I would advise using Nikon lenses and going for a Nikon mount - either from Red, or from Optitek as neither involves voiding Red warranties, and they retain the existing Red One backfocus adjustment.

The Birger Mount is only 1285.00, not too bad when the other option is switching to Nikon and reinvesting for lenses, though I'd hate to void out a warranty. Looks like I'll be considering a Scarlet now...

Yeah I picked up a Birger mount for my Red One! Couldn't be happier. And they also sale a Birger PL mount
which I also intend to pick up (used)! Birger is at the moment taking orders @ 1285! Kinda stiff but if you
got a bunch of Canon Glass it's a no brainer!

I got a Red One and U mean to tell me you can now rent a freaking EPIC for 500 bucks A DAY??? Wow!

RED never officially endorsed any Canon mounts that I'm aware of. They tried with the Birger mount, but in the end the two parties couldn't agree on the treatment of the data cable and apparently the shipping product changed slightly from the one RED had officially approved, so it made them made and they decided the Birger mount would void the camera warranty. Those who had already purchased (and presumably installed the mount, or had the mount installed by RED) before the warranty decision was made, were grandfathered in and allowed to keep their warranty and Stage-3 trade-in (if applicable). Now I see that's kinda been mentioned already...

All that said, the Birger mount is still probably the best solution out there for using Canon lenses exclusively.

...There's also the P+S Technic IMS mount system, but I don't believe it's in production anymore and it was more expensive than the Birger.

I didn't say that, but yes you can get a Rep Epic from a lot of places for $500 a day, mostly brain only, sometimes includes a side handle. For $500 a day I leave my camera in one piece with side handle, top plate, module adapter, and upgraded fans. ... but unless you own a scarlet, or want a back up body that package won't really do anything for you.

The Birger is flat genius, but the Impero is definitely more of an issue, and much harder to find.

We love our Birger/Impero on our One.
