  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has ANYONE tried putting SSD's into the 320GB or 640GB case???

Holy crap that is awesome!

Which firmware are you on and which drive are you able to get 4k?
Sadly I spoke a little to soon on recording 4K. With a fast OCZ drive I got 4K to work with
major dropped frame issues. Sometimes it would mount and do 4K other times it would say
slow media. I'm tring to source some GOOD SSD drives to see if they can "hang" with a 4K write speed.
Stay tuned!

I doubt your problems are down to slow media. think about it.. the red one records compressed 4k onto CF cards..are your SSDs slower than CF cards? ..no is the answer. the 2.5k bmcc has a higher data rate than the red one, that's why they struggle to capture UNCOMPRESSED 2.5k..

Could we still get an image/model number of the OCZ SSD? Thus far if what youre claiming is true is the only instance of a RED ONE recognising any other media besides red official media as non slow.

How difficult would it be too adapt the CF module to CFast 2.0? CFast does just use SATA. Could you fabricate an adapter that would allow you to connect to the internal SATA?

Do you know about the little button on the RAID controller inside the RED Drive? :-)

Mike

Mike, you are making me curious ... I don't know about this button?

Sure, you could do it. Would it work? Probably not. The RED firmware would probably not recognize the hardware or any card you use - assuming you could find one that could actually work with the data rates and writing methods - though it is certainly possible that it would work until RED plugs the hole in another firmware update.

I can email you pictures. I uploaded some links as well.

Can anyone confirm this magic "reinitialization" button does anything? :)

cheers guys

It supposedly reformats/reinitialises the array / stripe set...

Mike

thanks mike! do you know if anyone has successfully done this after replacing the original hard drives with SSD's?

I started a tread on this last month and have sadly hit a brick wall. The only drive I got to even begin to write 4k was my OCZ
it would work with dropped frames then sometimes it would say slow media. I've tried others with no luck. A member on here linked be
to some super fast solid state drives! So I'm gonna give them a shot. But @ 2K all is well. I shall keep u all posted between shoots, kids,
and drinking

Yeah but those are super fast CF cards I bet my last dollar. It's all about the sustained speeds not "burst" speeds.
That's why there so much imo.

Oh it's not a claim. I have pictures posted along with the model of the drive in another thread.
The model of the OCZ drive Agility 3 AGT3-25SAT3-240G.

The SSD modules inside REDmags are standard off-the-shelf Toshiba SSDs - but with rather special firmware developed by or on behalf of RED, to ensure exactly what you mention: 100% guaranteed rock-solid continuous writing. Unlike a computer there's no way to meaningfully buffer the data coming off the sensor, its a real-time system - so ALL 'internal' SSD misbehaviour - recalibration, garbage collection, housekeeping utilities - has to be written out of the script.

Any storage system for a movie camera has to be designed to work this way.
