Hey guys,

On My Epic I have the fan upgrade, but on my Scarlet I do not. I recently rented out my Scarlet and they installed the latest production firmware on set and ran the fans on adaptive mode. The camera did fail on that shoot and I offered to send them an Epic to replace it but they chose to use another camera they already had on set. I'm just curious if anybody knows if its a problem to run adaptive mode without the additional fans installed.

Absolutly not.
I've been working with the adaptive mode set to 70° since day one in hot conditions and didn't have any trouble (using the original bottom fan and the FanPlate). Now RED could chime in if they saw any harm to the electronic board due to using the highest temp setting (70°) but there was no warning of that from their part. The only sign I can see from them is that the standard setting in build 5 is 65°.

See you.

Pat

There is another thread on this subject:
From what I've read there, the issue seems to be related to when the camera goes in to sleep mode.

When adaptive mode is selected and the camera goes to sleep, the fans turn off. Unfortunately, even in sleep mode, the camera continues to generate heat.

This seems to lead to a potentially bad overheating condition. Not everyone who has loaded the new firmware has come across this issue though.

You should ask them if the camera was set to go to sleep when this happened.

This happend to one person with the Beta build and RED didn't manage to reproduice this error. I never used sleep mode but adaptive mode didn't get me in trouble (using 4.0.18)

Well maybe two...
Had the same thing happen to me ...

I was commenting specifically on the situation that Jay described, but his was beta firmware and Louis said this was Production firmware.

Jay's camera went to sleep, overheated, and no longer booted; that is where I would start looking.

I'll admit that I have only 30 years of experience trouble shooting computer systems and software , but those are the conditions that raised a flag to me. If Louis can find out more details then we can see if there is any correlation.

Most of the other comments relating to increased operating temperature seem to stem from the new default setting of the "target core temperature" for adaptive fan mode so they are not an issue.

Unfortunately, I don't know what the running temp was, just that the camera was running in adaptive mode, didn't have the fans installed, and eventually failed during that shoot.

Official word from Red is that it's totally safe running Adaptive Mode at 65-70 Degrees Celsius.

You will notice your REDMAG being a bit toasty as well as the camera, but the camera is regulating it's temperature within the safe zone.

Thanks Phil for this statement. Do you have any link to the official word? I following this topic closely and didn't find it here.

See you.

Pat

I called and asked right when I got my fans, but also verified it at Red Studios Hollywood later.

It's more about the algorithm in each mode and how it controls the temperature. Also, Red's not going to allow any fan mode that will destroy your sensor, camera brain, or media.
