Hello,
there are a lot of lamps on the market. I´m looking for a good light setup. I don´t want to spend so much money on it, because most of the time i´m shooting outside. Maybe 800$ for 2 lights. I don´t want to see the model burning under the light because of the lamps are to hot. And i think LED is not really possible because of the shutter? On events i got shutter problems and black lines on the picture.
What do you think?
Which lights do you prefer? And how much power do i need to light up the model when i´m outside?

depends on what you are shooting. give us some examples - if you're doing beauty lighting you'll need a soft source, meaning softbox or a modified beauty dish. if you just need fill, you can get away with something smaller. if you're shooting outdoors against the sun, you'll need an HMI with a generator on location. renting might be better for your jobs if you only have have $800 as HMIs start in the thousands, even for knock offs

have you had a chance to use them outdoors? i'd be interested to see how the LED performs; usually LEDs have a rapid fall off but these look interesting

If you think LED has shutter issues you really need to learn a LOT more before you start buying lights. $700 will not buy you a worthwhile light kit even for doing talking head interviews. To light the model outside on a cloudy day you would need a 1600 HMI or above. In the $10 000 range, not $700.

exactly my thought. but it does look like he upped his budget since he bought a rotolight anova

In a dark, shadowy alley that light will have subtle effect, otherwise, outside, it will not really be visible. You coudl buy other LEDs with exact equivalent light quality for far less $$ - and all will have very poor color rendition. Again, you know, some people actually go to film school and apprentice before half-hazardly buying some lights and calling themselves DPs. I did.

All-time best lightning? Pretty sure it started with several 250K Lightning Strikes--to which David Devlin added a bunch of crazy shit in a box, custom trigger finger M18s or some kinda other insanity, I can't remember exactly what right now--they sparked it just once, it spooked the titular War Horse, Spielberg said get that damn box off my set, and the best lighting rig death metal band outta Texas was put to bed forever, never to be captured on film.

Maybe someone on set took a video on their cell phone?

I got a very got exhibition price under 800
I think for outdoor they are not powerfull enough, but i will test them outdoor in october.

LEDs have no throw. They're absolutely useless indoors as well as outdoors, not to mention the green colour spike.

For cheap portable disposables I use high output daylight balanced flourescents in a beauty dish or behind a white umbrella, but even then you need a lot of them to make a difference. However they do have the advantage of not cooking the model.

Think "poor man's kinos" and you're in the right ballpark.

Hi Paul - how do you rig your beauty dish? I've seen the Joker adapter which can modify a profoto beauty dish to use with their HMI heads, but haven't seen other solutions for a high output

I don't rig it very well. The four flouros stick out of it by a good 4" each, rendering it little more than a big bracket. So to soften it up I usually put a scrim between it and the subject, or bounce them off the ceiling.

Any one at our shoot for "The RED dress" short film at Red Studios, will have an entire different experience and filing then you did with LED's Paul, you should give the Area 48 a try.

I did not used any Snap Bags, (Soft Box) for this particular shoot, of course one is very different then the other, were the Snap Bag allows full control of the light were with Barn Doors you can only control so much, also the light output with a Snap Bag is different do to the interior reflective material, and I would also make use of the Snap Grid (Egg Crate) in combination as to have a directional control of the light.

Minor reflections off Barn-doors even when in Matte Black are a given, but it is not the kind of reflection that would effect anything image wise, too faint to do so.
