I want to throw this out there.. Not sure what's happening cause it just happened.. I put the "sleep mode" on my EPIC to try it out and see the difference in power drain. We'' I cam back to the camera about 20 min later and it was HOT HOT HOT.. I mean too hot to touch. I've been letting it cool down, but now it will not turn on. Going to let it cool down some more, but I am very scared my EPIC may have been bricked by this new beta firmware.

Regardless if I am right or wrong.. Be careful!!

Yeah the camera has cooled down, and now it's not working. Pressing power button causes it to go to yellow for 2 seconds, the fan turns on for a quick moment, then nothing. I do not have the funds for a repair right now.. PLEASE tell me there's an easy fix to this.

Jay

Although the outside may be cooled down, perhaps the inside is still HOT. try waiting 30 minutes. Also, if possible, try rolling back to an earlier version of the firmware (I realize that may not be possible)

Sorry to hear this Jay... thank you so much for the warning. Hope everything works out.

I have a shoot on Wednesday... I'm really worried. I baby this camera like crazy cause I do not have the time or money to lose it.. I've filled out a ticket.. Hope they have an answer for me.

If I hold down the power button for more than 10 sec the fans come up.. But they go off after a while

I installed the firmware yesterday and the fan control setting defaulted to adaptative - I too left the camera unattended for a couple minutes but then I noticed how silent the camera was and the temp was in the high forties. Quickly switched the fan control to AUTO and everything came back down.

Maybe if I had not noticed in time I would be in the same boat. I really hope your camera is ok.

Noticed the same on mine... fan was extremely silent while not recording... so I switched it back to auto.

I really thought RED had put protections in place to keep the camera from overheating!! I just got done telling a new user this a few weeks ago.

Under previous builds this was definitely true - the camera would kick into high fan mode if it got too warm.

AFAIK they did. Maybe it's a bug. Could also be a bad coincidence of course.

Had to send mine in a few weeks ago where it didn't want to boot anymore. Last thing I tried was to use a new formatted mag and downgrade to a stable release with nothing else attached but the monitor and side ssd. Didn't work. Worst thing that would happen is that you have to rent a body. You have everything else.

PS. Sorry, didn't want to scare you. It could be different with yours.

And just renting the body only is not soo expensive. Maybe you can find someone from here to help you out with a good price if the worst thing does happen.

Good to know! Setting my camera to auto-mode immediately... I too was very surprised by how quiet the fans were upon booting after the firmware upgrade.

just to be devils advocate, check your cords and batteries. test your accessories on another brain too. rule out anything else.. maybe your right and its firmware, but might as well be vigilant to isolate the issue

Well I have to say, this is my first time dealing with RED tech support.. It's after 8pm on Sunday, and they are hard at work. That makes me feel a little better.

They are trying to reproduce the problem.. I will keep you all informed. I am 90% sure it's the firmware, the camera was working perfectly before that, and it only happened after it went into sleep mode.

Had the same thing happen to me during a black balance, but with both cameras on a 3D rig. No joy and I had to send my camera in.

Have you tried to roll back your firmware to the last version, than roll back again to a version before that? I've done that in the past and have recovered a camera that had the same boot issues.

If my camera is not booked and you can provide insurance my camera is yours if you need it.
