Schneider Xenon FF Prime Lens Set Group Buy?

I love that we don't even have group buy terms and we're already wanting to jump in... PL for me. :)

Wow so much interest, that should give me some leverage when discussing the discounts!

Absolutely. See if the mount type will even matter with a group buy, since it seems we're somewhat split on EF vs. PL :)

while you have their attention, can you please suggest they team up with some financial service to offer the kind of deals other brands do on leases (if not now then at some point)? I personally prefer leasing to own for my type of business, so the current Canon deal or the just ended Zeiss deal at Duclos with 0 interest leases goes a long way for certain business models. Depending on the discount I will obviously try my best to just pay in full, or secure third party financing if needed, but I just figured I'd suggest the financing deal while someone actually seems to be making progress with them on a group buy deal (awesome idea btw!). I'm seriously considering dropping 20k+ on Canon glass before their deal ends just because its like a no brainer if you can monetize on it faster then the leases end... So I see it as a good way to leverage getting lots of glass without actually having much money in hand (we'll see how it ends for me at some point lol:crazy:).

But regardless I am still interested, I just wanted to voice a strategy I personally think is useful when it comes to getting glass. Since its an entry level 3 set I am interested regardless, and thanks for organizing this!

Good idea! Will definitively talk with them about it.

You guys are going to really love the build quality on these. They are like metal stones.

Interested...PL Mount

I don't want to derail this thread so forgive me if this seems off topic but, As I am exploring the purchase of new lenses, I am wonderi g how folks might compare these lenses to RPPs. I have never worked with RED lenses so I am clueless beyond what I have read.

Not trying to start a discussion of better and best, or bash anything, just whether the two are comparable or not.

Thanks.

Xenons are smaller, lighter, and have a smaller front diameter. The Xenons are slightly slower in speed at T2.1 vs. T1.8. The Xenons will cover full frame, RPP's are s35 only. The RPP's are very sharp, not sure how the Schnieders will fare but my guess is they will be a little less sharp than RPP's. The Schneiders are considered a cross between cooke and leica in look being slightly creamy and low contrast while the RPP's closer to the sterile, snappy Zeiss look. Until we see side by sides this is just speculation on the look. Close focus is better on the RPP's. Focus marks will be better on the Schnieders than the more sparce RPP ring. Schneiders will have better return on investment than the RPP's, not to mention the ability to change lens mounts to use on different systems.

Personally I'd go Schneider for the mount adaptability, size, weight, and full frame coverage. Just hope they round out the set soon.

Matt - thanks very much for that synopsis. Very helpful and exactly what I was hoping to learn. Knowing this stuff doesn't make things any simpler though, does it?

I might be one of the few folks here who can answer this question at the moment.

If you haven't read my first look at these Xenons yet:

While I wouldn't make a hard statement regarding optical quality due to the nature of prototypes, what I can say are simple observations.

First and obviously coverage. The Xenon-FF Primes cover 6K Full on Dragon. They are smaller and lighter weight than the Red Pro Primes, but are still hefty. Mechanics are good on both in my mind. The RPPs are a bit faster and certainly render differently. The iris design and out of focus image will be visible differences as well.

Contrast, color, resolving power are unknowns right now really. They will certainly perform in the CP.2 and CN-E range and perhaps a bit better. Notably they are different as these are actually purpose built for motion work.

Hey, Phil. Thanks for adding your knowledge. I have definitely read your first look - it was much the reason I even have these Schneiders on my radar screen. I have since been seeing some good prices on RPPs which made me wonder. The Xenons are clearly a lot more compact and the PL vs. EF thing makes a difference since I would have to plan on an additional $2K for a PL mount.

Terry, thanks for asking that question, had the same thoughts on
my mind. And thanks to Phil and Matt for the responses.

Ideally I'd like to test them before the group buy. It's a fair investment, would prefer to have at least held them once. If there are any early takers down under, I'd love to test them for an afternoon.

For me since RED is going larger with each sensor upgrade, I'd personally go FF all the way. Then I can use them on any other camera knowing they will cover without issue. Plus my guess is the next RED 8K sensor will be Full Frame (just a guess since were already almost there). I just like the idea of mount adaptability, being able to switch from PL to EF and vice versa. I think given the price you'd be hard pressed to pick RPP's over Xenons (if they stay in the $3K-$4K per lens price range).

I also forgot to mention the Xenons have a 95mm thread on the front for screw on filters. That's another bonus if you do not want or need a matte box for a shot. The Xenons have the same dimensions so you won't have to move your matte box or follow focus between lens changes. 14 iris blades should give great round looking bokeh similar to the CP.2's.

I'm really excited for these lenses if they resolve well. Hope they are creamy but sharp like the Summilux-C lenses. I'd be all over them if they did.

Very interested. Im in the Uk though does this afect the GB ?
