Movi M10 Setups, FAQs, and More

Hello Jonathan,

Thanks a lot for taking your time writing all those valuable infos.
I'm trying to see a video with the working Movi to be able to evaluate the noise it makes (without using a lavalier mic in a factory) ;-)
A lot of people said "virtually no noise" but would love to hear what virtually means.
I think it could also be a selling argument for those manufacturers.

See you.

Patrick

Sorry I didn't take a video, but I definitely did try to hear the motors at one point. I can honestly say that they're practically silent. I had to stick my ear right next to the rig to hear anything. The motors are quieter than say, the sound of the epic fans when recording. I honestly don't think it'll ever be an issue when recording sound.

Well that's a good news! The only gimbal motor I know is the Arris CM2000 for the Gopro on the DJI ;-) so it seems there is no comparison!

Thanks for your answer.

It was great working with Jon yesterday. The balance adjustment of the RED was interesting. Weight and Mass combine that the final adjustments are very very fine. Couple of corrections. The back roll beam has three screws adjustment. You need to get close with final adjustment by sliding the camera mount left/right on the tilt bar. With the RED and the side handle you are limited to that left/right so the roll beam needs to be pretty close. Either slide the camera off or get a 3mm right angle hex key.

Patrick there is no noise from the motors. And the Epic fans are by orders of magnitude louder.

While we were going up and down the hallway outside Jon's office he muttered several times, "Where's the HULK when I need him".

The RED LCD and cable are definitely to stiff. There are HDMI cables from Hyperthin that would likely be much more suitable.

And while he didn't take any photos here are two that I got at the end. We did the ones of Jon in one take, so he could take another rest break

Gary / Jon,
How did you mount the Red Touch and did you guys try the more pliable cables like those from the Red One.?

Thanks!
CB

Gary had some extra bits from his CS rig that he brought. We used those to mount the LCD, but the Movi does come with a little bracket you can use for accessory mounting. Unfortunately I only have the braided cables for my LCD, so we were unable to test the older kinds. Although I still think even those might be too stiff.

Jonathan, great write up!

Thanks for taking the time.

+1, a comprehensive preview. Thanks!

For anyone wondering about height issues and holding up the camera like a tall person for eye-height, you're able to 'top mount' the camera on this rig to gain some of that height difference between mortals and basketballers.

Say whaaaaat? No one ever mention that to me! haha. Sounds cool. I guess I do remember seeing a picture of it in an "overslung" mode of sorts...

I actually posed this question on the Freefly forums today after your post, and got the answer back that it's very doable; it's basically just Steadicam mode, from what I understand. Automatic mode swapping!

Jonathan, this is exactly how I have my MōVI setup and it works nicely. Only change I make sometimes is to power the DP4 with one of our Lipos but the LPE6 batts are more user friendly.
Tabb

What model of Lipos are you using to power the redrock?

Just curious if anyone else around here has received a shipping notification? Trying to find out a ballpark of how far they've gotten into the preorder queue...

Patrick, just wanted to reassure you (now that I have the rig) that you can only hear the Movi if you stick your ear right next to the motors. I think it's fair to call it "silent."

So, I have a long commercial shoot all week and I definitely didn't want to show up on set with a card board box. In Denver, we have a company called Atlas Cases that sells and stocks any pelican you can think of. I took the Movi box and foam over there and they did a few measurements. The 1640 is where we landed, and I think it's a great option, especially if you want to keep the foam that came with the Movi (why the heck not?).

The case itself is almost the perfect size for the Movi foam when talking about length/width dimensions. I did, however, have to shave about a quarter inch off the left and right sides of the foam to get it to fit. Underneath the Movi foam, I have a variety of accessories, including the Redrock kit, paralinx kit with dual receivers, chargers, and all the power cables, HDMI cables, screws, tools, and connectors that one might need. I'll admit that my cardboard box isn't very elegant, but it's just a bunch of cords in there. I'm considering just losing the box and putting all the cables and misc. stuff in the hole that I made for the box. Anyway, we'll see how this works!

Happy to answer any questions!
