Simple question, need to buy one.

Mainly for pulling focus. Important to me is Brightness, Peaking for Focusing.

What would you recommend?

Daylight on the TV logic is terrible. Peaking control is just average. But I haven't tried the SmallHD yet so can't comment on it. This is why the new High Brightness monitor from SmallHD is going to save the day!

I am literally about to pull the trigger on the DP7 PRO OLED for a Glidecam monitor on the bottom of the sled but after reading this, now I am a bit worried about the difference in performance of the two models in the daylight.

Those that have used it in the daylight, are there really that many complaints that the OLED is not bright enough for the daylight? If thats the case, I guess I am going with the LCD....

What about the Atomos Samurai Blade guy's in terms of Brightness and Peaking for Focusing.

Hi Chad,

If you are heading to OC, I have an Ikan Md7 that you could try out. Lemme know.

Thank you very much

DO NOT purchase the DP7 Pro OLED for outdoor use..it's simply not bright enough without the sunhood which makes steadicam use really limiting for determining comp. I just use the RedTouch mounted atop my Epic when Steadicamming with the brigthness turned up all the way. It's good enough for reference and I have the paralinx arrow going to a SmallHD DP7 Pro for client review.

Copy that! Thank you for the input! you have definitely saved me some serious time and money.

thank you! I will let you know when I am in the area, possibly 2 weekends from now !

I am having a tough time deciding as well;

Mainly looking for a monitor for judging focus easily in the range of $1,000-1,500.
I am an AC so waveform/sound levels/extra features do not mean much to me (because there will be another monitor for that)

yes the DP7 HBSX or the TVLogic SRM are great monitors but its not within everyone's budget.

any opinions/advices from people who tried these monitors or other ones that fit in the same range ?

You could always pick up a second-hand smallHD DP6. Great monitor for judging focus and you can prob find one for less than $500.

Thanks guys for your input guys....will help lot in making the right decision and better pulling of focus, by the AC.

The SmallHD is far superior to the TV Logic for focus. The DP6 has great off angle viewing and the focus assists tools are sharper and have faster processing then the TV Logic. The SmallHD has both peaking and Focus Assist, whereas the TVLogic has only an aperture adjust and a focus assist. Everything always seems slightly soft to be on the TV Logic, great for DP's but not for 1st AC's. I'm about to pick up the High Bright DP-7, really looking forward to it.

That's very interesting, Dave. All the AC's near me have a STRONG preference for the TV Logic...not really sure why. We have a DP6 and I like it quite a bit. I've considered a DP7, but I often rent my package out, and I don't think the local AC's would be happy with that choice.

I have two AC7 OLED's, and one DP7 PRO OLED. The AC7's are fantastic for pulling focus. They have multiple focus assist modes, and the screen looks good. Not at all color accurate, and blacks are crushed, but a very sharp screen.
The DP7 has far fewer color issues, but it consumes more power, and the focus assist features aren't (currently) as good as the AC7.

I have both the tvlogic 056 and the smallhd dp6, I'm a AC.

The tvlogic wins, better image because of the aperture setting, better GUI, and when magnifying or using tools on epic, it doesn't turn off for a second.

And the control knob actually work. The two dp6 I got have trouble turning to the left. Or right I don't remember. Worked a year now it doesn't any more and it as he'll just to switch brightness, contrast or any controls.

Hey Tom,

Yeah in LA, a lot of AC's use the TVLogic because that's what rental houses here purchased, but for me I think the off angle viewing is terrible, and I'm not always in a position where I can get my eyes directly in front of the monitor, (hand held, tight dolly shots). I understand why AC's prefer the TVlogic, I use one for my DP's & Operators but the SmallHD is much better outside in bright light and much sharper. I just put a small piece of P touch on the top of the DP6 that says for focus only. With the peaking and focus assist turned on the image is no where near color accurate or accurate exposure, that's what the TV logic is for.

Best,

DE
