Everything you wanted to know about CANON GLASS

Everything you wanted to know about CANON GLASS
Thought it was good video to share for people who are scratching there heads about what affordable quality glass to purchase.

Hi Mark,

Didn't you shoot the Dragon footage, that you posted, with all Canon lenses? Could you post the lenses used and any commentary, that might be useful to those contemplating lens purchases for Dragon. Sorry if this has been covered in the previous threads on your, very useful image posts.

thank you very much

Yes we did. But we used the stills L glass for the test, We ordered the cine glass but it still hasn't arrived as yet.
I am a canon glass fan. Especially because it covers 6k easily.

Mark, thanks for posting this.
Have you tried the Canon 30-105?

Many of our clients opt for the Canon 30-105mm as a step down from the Optimo 30-80mm (and end up liking the 30-105mm)

I think that's a great zoom lens, T2.8, sharp, holds its focus through the zoom, virtually no breathing, we can put it in Canon or PL mount in seconds.

That is useful to know. That is going to be a very useful range for Dragon.

Just shot with the 30-300 this morning. Great build quality and virtually no breathing. Don't want to comment on the look until I see the footy in a proper suite.

Cheers - #19

I am so curious if this lens (30-300) is worth 40K. I would love to hear your feedback on this particular zoom.

Don't take my word, but isn't the DRAGON image circle rated at 33.906mm?

The Canon 30-105mm has a 31.4mm image circle. Might not cover at 6k....

Also good to consider. I was thinking more about the fact that the focal range is not as useful on my s35 as it will be on Dragon.

That's actually very true, didn't think of it that way.

There's also a PL to PL adapter that "widens" your lens's image circle.

Bringing back those old Cooke and Angenieux zooms. It says it will make the lenses cover 4k and beyond.

Wonder if putting that adapter on the Canon 30-105mm, will that make it cover DRAGON?

Given those choices, I would take the ZE glass any day of the week for cinema use.

yeah i know its perfect for Epic but also i have 5D mark3 which i take photos with it..and i have back problems 3 Canon lenses all i need 16-35 II+24-70 II+70-200 (own this) thats it im gonna cover 16 to 200mm (hence the 2.8F)
3 lenses vs my dream Zeiss set which is 15+21+28+35+50+85+100mm

Thanks Savva!
step down??? in EU the Canon it's 5k eur MORE!!
You have Angenieux addicted clients!! ;)

Is it warm and creamy almost like a cooke?
Or what kind of lenses does it remind you of?
Is the mount change more difficult than a CP.2?
Only authorized dealer/techs can do it, right?
I believe Canon don't sell the mount only...

It shouldn't but it would be awesome if it will!

Of course but with a slight light loss...

Great post Mark. I'm using Nikon (manual) still lenses on my Scarlet right now with an Optitek mount (w/PL available) but am most interested in comparing the Nikon Ai vs. Canon auto mounts. Are there particular advantages you see the Canon Ai mount having over Nikon Ai, especially with Dragon in mind?

I've made a hefty amount of income with Canon glass over my career and have a good chunk of their L series glass. Even was CPS member for a while.

Gotta admit the new CN-E Zooms are really impressive from top to bottom.

If there was a proper full set of CN-E primes in PL mount I would have purchased them the day they were released. I own their still lens counterparts and enjoy them. I'm mostly bothered that it's not a "true" full set of glass across the range, aperture range is all over the place. That would have been the killer set really. Once the CN-E 35mm (T1.3 or T1.5) whatever it turns out to be I'll revisit these primes.

One thing I mentioned to one of their lens designers a long while ago was their 20mm f/2.8 is a fairly dated design (although a lens I still use) and we got to talking about the old K35 18mm T1.5 design and also how it it could be desirable also for their APS-C cameras. I believe a modern fast 18mm produced by them would fit in the same form factor based on what I discussed with him. He responded nicely to that concept. I also stressed that it was extremely odd that they offered their cinema zooms in PL and not their primes, however this is mostly a design limitation based on the original EF still lenses and they would have to "re-design" which is a bad word when it comes to this particular series.

I have hopes though. Crazy hopes.

Matt Duclos is supposedly adapting his changeable PL mount from the Canon CN-E Zooms to the primes.

Whoa. Okay. I didn't know that, also didn't know there was space for that. I'll ping him next week and figure out how that's going. I got another question I need an answer on for a zoom too.

"CANON - (14, 24, 50, 85, 135mm) The Canon CN-E primes are very similar to the Zeiss CP.2 in terms of size, weight, and image quality. However, the Canon CN-E can be a bit faster in some focal lengths. Overall, the CN-E primes are faster thanks to the 50mm and 85mm being a T1.3, the 24mm T1.5, the 14mm T3.1, and lastly the 135mm a T2.2. Canon is expected to release their 35mm to fill out the set within the year. The Canon CN-E also provide a 35mm full frame image circle which can be quite useful with todays larger sensors, just like the CP.2. The primary drawback to the Canon CN-E is the fact that they are strictly available in Canon EF mount. A Canon EF mount can be adapted to the Sony cameras opening them up to an army of Canon EF lenses. The mount may not be an issue for much longer. Duclos Lenses is developing a clever mount conversion for PL cameras soon. The complete set of five lenses will run just over $20k for the Canon CN-E primes."
