  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Should I get the Epic Dragon Upgrade or the MOVI?

I have been working non stop to save up for the Epic Dragon and pretty much there and I notice that the MOVI is jut 6 grand more...which one would be more beneficial for my business? A top of the line camera or a new Rigging system? Any thoughts please let me know thanks!
 
Only you can answer that question. I hope that you would know your business better than the we would. There are so many Movi alternatives coming to the market, I personally would wait it out to see where the dust is going to settle.
 
I would advise on the Epic Dragon. There are so many gyro-stabilizers in development that are bound to be much cheaper than the MOVI - you'll probably want to just go with one of those down the line (thread on here somewhere - I think under DSMC Accessories)
 
As somebody who has had some extensive time with the movi rig, go for the dragon. 1 its gonna be much more than 6 grand, since you need wireless follow focus and 3 wireless monitors to even be remotely useful. Dragon will benefit you much more.

The movi is in a weird place as its much too fragile to go out on shoots alone, you would be paying for maintenence all the time. And its one of those deals where to have it be a worthwhile investment, you would need to charge 1k and up a day for you to go to set with it and help operate, and in the indie market its hard to sell a 1k shot.

Its a great tool, but not as amazing as i wanted it to be. I would look both over very carefully. but my vote is dragon.

The MOVI is indeed cool.

Not knowing your business plan at all I can say this.

MOVI gets used for certain shots.

Dragon gets used on all the shots.

That's how I'd look at it.
 
Just throwing something out there for the other side of the coin. MoVI can be used with many cameras, Dragon just on RED shoots.

It really depends on your business model as others have already mentioned. Do you work with other camera systems often? Do you already have stabilization gear (like steadycams etc)? What things are you typically shooting?

Both Dragon and MoVI are fantastic tools to have in the kit either way you look at it :)
 
I agree with teh above posters

besteady + relentless are coming out with cheaper gimbals--get a dragon
 
I have also asked myself... should I get the MōVi? Should I get Dragon?

The answer was simple... YES.

All kidding aside, I saw the MōVi having a more immediate impact on my work, so the money is going there 1st and Dragon 2nd. I'm also looking forward to flying the lil BM PCC on there. I've already put 5 or 6 grand into the Teradek and RedRock wireless FF. Both have been very useful even without the MōVi.

Since I hate shoulder rigs but love having stabilized non-topsy turvy shots, I think I would find the Movi of better use for me. Love Dragon but I currently can't hold my Epic steady to save my life.

Overall, I think the Movi's technology is far superior then the other gimbals (most can't hold the Epic yet). The ability to control it remotely doesn't even appear as an option on many other gimbal sites.

Sad thing is years from now, we'll have cameras that has this built in (to the lense or the camera). We'll have cameras that you can focus later. What's sadder is that it'll be the size of an iphone...ha, ha. Evolution continues to make me spend.

Dragon is fabulous but I have yet to out-perform my Epic. Eventually I'll surpass my needs and want to tame the beast! Till then, I'm trying not to create motion sickness and the shaky cam look.
 
I think many will face with this dilemma, Dragon or PanTilt Head, Dragon or Track Dolly, Dragon or Crane, Dragon or set of 7 Kinoflo, even Dragon or Scarlet as B camera. I think many will choose the some cool device because benefits of Movietch Track dolly or Kessler Crane with pan tilt head or set of 7 Kinoflo Scarlet as B camera is very and very obvious and cool, and the difference between absence of Track Dolly or Scarlet and availability of Track Dolly or Scarlet is very tangible but the difference between very cool Epic camera MX and very very very cool Epic camera Dragon is not such obvious. Yes dragon is cool but Epic MX is cool too). Why need to buy the best picture in the world if you already have the best picture in the world with Epic MX. For example if you can shoot movie with Epic MX plus Track Dolly plus set of 9 Kinoflo it always be better if you should only static shoots with Epic Dragon without light. Yes 6K is cool but 5K is more then enough cool too, 120 fps at 5K is cool, but 96 fps is more then enough too, 16,5 stops is cool but it can be reach with HDR mode too, but never static shoots will be enough cool compared with shoot with Track Dolly or crane.
Actually I think 9,5K for Dragon is high price because of this alternatives. It is for gourmet who don't worry about money.
I think it would be better if price for Dragon would be around 3K and many owners can buy it and not only the top filmmakers.

but that's because in the 6 months there are going to be at least 5-10 brushless handhelds for large cameras that will be much cheaper and just as good.
 
Dragon.

Let the 3 Axis Gimbal stabilization market "stabilize" before plucking the first one available off the shelf, especially for 15K. You owe it to yourself to let the competition rip each other off in order to bring you a great product at a great price =)
 
All of the above comments above are great.. But if you didn't read Phil Holland's post.. Read it Again.. and perhaps out loud to yourself. No one would think you're nuts.. Make lots of Sense....! But if that doesn't stick.. Think of resale value.. I can DRAG-ON and on..
