I need a zoomlens are note sure about the canon 70-200 or perhaps the sigma 50-150 2.8 . While I like the 70-200 I wished it started at 50 instead. Thats why im interested in the sigma. Would be nice if some one could share some frames from the sigma and tell if you like it or not.

Another one could be the
Tokina AT-X 535 Pro DX -Zoom 50-135 mm F:2.8

Thanks!

I got to start by saying I in no may work for Sigma or have any kind of financial arrangement with them. You probably know where I'm going with this.

The lens is spectacular!

My disclaimer, I don't have a Red, I use it on a C300.

I have both, the previous generation, which was smaller, lighter, had no image stabilization, and is beautifully sharp (and I would venture to guess that is what the Red 50-150 had inside). I was perfectly happy with it.

But when I purchased my second C300, and needed another one, I went to check out this newest version. I did not like it at first, because it was much bigger and heavier than the first generation. I went home and looked to see if I could find some reviews, and found this:

http://www.lenstip.com/364.4-Lens_r..._f_2.8_APO_EX_DC_OS_HSM_Image_resolution.html

So I went back to Samy's and bought it.

It is a fantastic lens. Very sharp wide open, improves slightly when you close it down just a bit. And, like you said, the big deal is the 50 vs 70 wide end. 70 works on a 5d full frame camera, but it's way too long on a cropped sensor (cinema). 50 is just right.

I have to add, I also own the latest Canon 70-200 2.8 mk2, and I love it on my 5D (plus the 50-150 won't work on the 5D), but I find that the Sigma compares favorably to it. The Sigma looks sharper, and better contrast, on my C300s.

Sigma is really coming a long way with their new glass. I have always been a Canon L snob, but these latest Sigma "Art" lenses have opened my eyes. Now I also own the 35mm 1.4 (the best 35 1.4 DSLR lens on the market today), and have my eye on the new 120-300 2.8 (waiting to see reviews on it).

It is NOT a full frame lens, btw, and I don't know if it will work on 5k. Buy it, try it, you can always return it if it doesn't. But as far as how good the glass is, I think you will love it.

thanks for the topic Joel and the tip Lenny :)

Ive been on the fence with a zoom for far too long.

this might help me decide.

one last question though.

do the Sigmas work with REDs electronics?

Hehe, the 120-300 looks like a killer-lens, can't wait for reviews.
The 50-150 has a nice range, i agree, it's a bit more interesting than a 70-200. But i would think about it only if it covers 5k on Dragon.

Thats the same thing with their new 18-35/1.8, i'm not too enthusiastic right now, i have to see how it performs on a RED first. ;)

I se thet the Sigma APO 50-150mm f/2.8 II EX DC APO HSM on the supported list but im intressted in the Sigma AF 50-150/2,8 EX DC APO OS HSM wich got a stabilizer. Has anyone tested it on a red?

Getting closer to get the sigma 50-150 but wouldlike to hear if its any cons of getting the version with stabilizer in terms of sharpness.

Thanks Tommaso, will read some tokina reviews. Have you tried sigma?

Does Sigma 50-150 mm f/2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM. Work with red? Can you control the iris etc? Does the os work?

It is really starting to boil down to a purchase. Anybody more have there take on sigma vs tokina 50-150? Or wich sigma flavor is the best would be much appricated.

How much weight can you put on the canon mount with no rail support. Is 1.4kg ok?

The Sigma 50-150 mm f/2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM has a weight of 1340g. Would I need rails? I used the canon 70-200f4 before and is only half of the weight (760g).

Today I got the Sigma 50-150 mm f/2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM to the store. I went there to test it. The lens felt very light even if its almost twice the canon 70-200F4 wich I used before. Did not feel like it was that much tension for the lens or the canon mount. I had two times the iris control stopped working thoe. I not sure if this could be a big issue. I seen this happen once or twice I used the canon 70-200 but never after that. The store keep it for me a few days. Hopefully I decide to go sigma or not before monday.

Still would be good to hear more users that work with lenses in the 1300g range to get my off my worries.

Im thinking like this. If you have a 5d (950g) with a battery grip (250g without batteries). Then you put the lens support on tripod and have the camera hanging on the lenses as intended. The lenses is actually built to have a 1200g (950+250) hanging of it. The sigma lens im looking at is only 140g more.

Feels like it should be totaly safe to use it with no support. What do you think?

I think your math is fairly sound but for one factor, leverage. Holding 5 pounds near your chest is a LOT easier than 5 pounds at arms length, thus the torque on the mount will be more from the length of the lens.

I personally would trust the Aluminum Scarlet / Epic mount, if that's what you have? But I would be careful, of course. And a simple rail support system in the near future could only help.

I own the lens, but for film work it is not suitable. The focus and the whole image shifts as you reverse zoom. As a fixed focal the manual focusing is too
stiff and the throw too short. Optically it is great at 150 and good at 50. Interestingly the zoom ring and operation is really nice, the build is great.
If You use it in auto focus mode like zapp and shoot style, it may be the right thing. Price is great

I tested it and did not get the is to work. Perhaps it does with newer firmware. I think im on 3.3 since its stable. So canon 70-200 is the winner for my needs.

Reviving this thread to get confirmation; does the Sigma 50-150 (non-OS) control properly on DSMC cameras? (specifically iris control)

I recall the 18-35 losing iris control if you pushed (+) while it was already at f1.8 up to like ~fw5+ (it would lock up the camera). Just want to make sure I'll actually be able to use the 50-150 lens on RED. Also, does it have hardstops?

I read that the auto-focus can have front-focusing issues, but I don't use AF during motion work. I also (obviously) don't expect it to be parfocal, more like a variable prime, so I *think* it should work well for my needs.

Resurrecting old thread.

How do the 50-150 (OS) match in color to the 18-35? Better than Canon 70-200 and worse than Sigma 50-100, I imagine. Anybody knows?
Thanks
