You're all invited to check out RED Ray on the big screen at the Downtown Independent(251 S. Main Street LA CA 90012)

9PM

Bring something short and awesome to watch. We've got a 2K barco but will most likely be projecting in 1080, we'll see, I'm still experimenting with getting the BARCO to sync with the REDRAY.

There will definitely be BEER!!!

Hey James ... what was that awesome dark beer you guys have on tap at the theater ... was a great time? Wish I could fly down there Monday, will have to catch you later.

I wish I lived in So Cal so I could come instead of on the east coast. Maybe you could get your hands on a Sony VPL-VW1000ES. The primary purpose of the Redray is 4K playback after 4K coding. How well does the encoding and uncoding (compression and decompression) work. And for that one needs a close to perfect 4K source material and a screen large enough to properly evaluate the losses caused by the compression and decompression. One needs to evaluate the compression and decompression of various input resolutions and various playback resolutions. How the beast up scales and down scales. I am not sure what loading widely varying source quality content at varying input resolutions and then playing them back at HD or 2K will show for purposes of Redray evaluation. Also one would have to evaluate how the compression decompression scheme works re 4HD output and then true 4K output. But no matter what is shown I am sure the event will be fun and informative and I thabk you for having it even though for logistical and expense reasons I can not attend.

Hey Mark, all of this makes sense from a testing standpoint. However at this time most, probably 80% or more, of the independent and smaller commercial cinemas like Downtown Independent are stuck with 2K. Upgrading to 4K means spending $60,000-$80,000 for a new DCI compliant projector and server, anything else until RED releases their projector is a waste of money and not useable in a cinema enviornment. Since we installed our DCI system 2 years ago we've seen one film come in that was finished at 4K AND distributed at 4K. We're opening MANIAC the new Elijah Wood movie on Friday, shot on EPIC at 5K, it will likely be delivered at 2K, some theaters will be exhibiting MANIAC with consumer grade BluRay. Indie distributors are totally scamming exhibitors and the audience by sending films out on BluRay. this has hopefully just ended or will end soon.

I just put up something I shot at 5K on our screen and it looks amazing at 1080. Further, this is way more than 4K resolution. For the Downtown Independent, REDRay will solve a huge workflow issue where in the past clients were bringing files in any combo of codec/color depth/bitrate/audio to play back from our aging macpro. RED just eliminated that problem.

We'll be hosting regular open screen nights, and will encourage out friends in the exhibition world to do the same, come on by if you're ever in LA.

James,

Congrats on getting your Redray. I attended the Red Film Festival and enjoyed your theatre very much! I know RSH installed their 4k in your theatre for the festival, was it a sony or barco?

Hey Mark! Don't you have a SONY expense acct.? No? Those cheap bastards.

I am independent of Sony but have worked on Sony projects and have sold their products in my recently closed high end AV store.

I just don't get it. Unless Red makes it, its a waste of money and is not useable in a cinema environment? Either you don't really mean that or if you do it is pure BS. If one wants to master in 4K, one needs a 4K projector. You can not see your errors unless you view 4K on a 10 ft wide screen. What Red should do is to give up on a high powered commercial laser projector because of present regulatory hurdles and use bulb technology to beat out Sony and the big boys and offer a DCI 4K compliant projector and server for about $25K. Cutting out the middle man by selling dire , $75K machines would cost around $50K. A commercial theater does not need a 4K projector but it does need a DCI 2K compliant one. Most viewers just won't care if a theater is 2K or 4K. Save money and shoot in 2K but no, someday one will want to master in 4K. Of course one could just upscale 2K to 4K. Get Technicolor to certify the scaler and you are in. Me ? I am just a consumer with a 4K projector now. I can replicate the color space but not the bit depth. But I want 4K content now and the only reason I could have for getting a Redray player now is for 4K shot, master, and distributed content. And I am not springing until I see what Odemax delivers content wise.

This is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME to hear. I will definitely support you. Thank you, James!

Hey James...below is something I posted on another thread. Given your involvement at the Downtown Independent, I would love to hear your thoughts. Maybe I'm way off base, and there are more opportunities that I am missing. I would like to imagine exhibition houses will adopt the new tech readily, and offer special screening times for truly independent content -- digital four-walling. However:

Although we tried stopping vertical integration in the states with legislation to prevent studios from owning production, distribution, and exhibition...I'm convinced that failed HORRIBLY.

Once we are able to easily send .RED files from home to a theater, effectively making all of us distributors, we'll see just how much of an oligarchy exists. It will likely be painfully obvious. Arbitrary standards instituted, bureaucracy, you name it...I hope it doesn't go this way, but we'll soon find out.

If nothing else, many of the coolest stories may have to skip the silver screen and go directly to in-home 4K theaters.

What are your thoughts?

Best,

Eryc

HERE WE GO AGAIN!-DATE CHANGED!!!!!!!

OPEN SCREEN NIGHT PART TWO8/5/2013 9PM Downtown Independent Cinema. 251 S. Main Street Los Angeles 90012

Bring something short(under 10 minutes) and awesome to show. We'll be screening from our REDRay at 1080p and/or DCP 2K if you have it. This is truly an OPEN SCREEN event and you do not need to submit or apply ahead of time to screen your stuff. Just show up and sign in and we'll play your film. This is not a festival or competition, you won't be judged nor is there a submission process, all you have to do is show up. I'll post a link to an official event page soon.

Don't worry if you can't make this one we'll be hosting an open screen night at least once a month with a goal of doing them weekly if there is demand.

This is as cool idea. Keep up the good work. I have some footage to share perhaps on the next round...

I've made a few sequences, in Premiere CC. Where do I go from there to get .RED? Redcine-X Pro??
Any links are much appreciated. Thanks. Hope to see you guys and your work soon.
