So I just got my Epic from my Scarlet trade in and yesterday it just stopped booting up.
I thought it was the screen or the video out.
I had a Scarlet on set and tried switching everything out to no avail.

Now it doesn't boot up all the way. The light on the power switch stats yellow.
I tried with batteries and power supply. Did the "force firmware upgrade" and still no joy.

I filed a report with RED and have not heard anything back a part from their " we got your request" email.
I have the biggest shoot of my life starting next week... any thoughts?

sorry to say, but you are not the only one, the same happend last friday to a friend of mine and he send it back.....
I hope they can find the problem a soon as possible. Good luck

If I had "the biggest shoot of my life" starting next week, I would be on the plane to CA already.
How much is the shipping to RED? I believe you can find domestic ticket to LA under $100...
Just saying...

Everytime I go to turn my red on I get scared something like this will happen.. Sorry to hear, hope it gets sorted ASAP.

Sorry to hear your Epic is acting up. It's sad that so many people seem to have little faith in RED's product performing consistently. Here on the forums is where problems are brought up, only hearing about the bad technical problems. I bet that less than 5% of users ever experience problems. Have faith, RED will take care of ya. They stand behind their product, and what great products they create.

They do, and Arrri forums have problems too.

For every 1 person having this kind of serious issues there are 1000s of us who's cameras are working just fine. After all this is state-of-the-art technology packed in such a small space (I think it might have been Jim himself who once compared it to having designed and build a nuclear reactor in a matchbox) and exposed to frequent location (ab)use - there are bound to be situations like these. Let us also remember that RED has sold more digital cinema cameras then all the other manufacturers combined - and then some...

My experience with RED support is one of a kind and one that I have never had with any other piece of HW technology ever. RED support guys and many other even high-ranking employees not from the support team never seem to sleep, or care which day of the week, or which hour of the day it is wherever in the world you are...

I hope your issue was resolved in time for your project...

Eep. I just got my Epic in the upgrade and its done the same thing :( support ticket has been issued - waiting to hear back. I'm hoping I don't have to ship it back in as I live in Australia so not only is shipping costly but slow and inconvenient. :( Luckily I don't have a big project underway at the moment! Best of luck with it!

Cameras aren't 100% reliable. I had issues with Arri 435, with Arri 253, with my own Arri-SR, with Sony F900R, with my RedOne and now with my Epic. All these cameras have seen the repair shop. Talk to a rental house and chat with them about camera reliability and robustness. This is the reason why you always have an spare body on the camera truck when the shoot relies 100% on a working camera and the rental shop is either not reachable within minutes or you are on a remote location.

My findings with Red cameras: they are fairly robust build, with Arri on par, have a betaish software behaviour and sometimes the hardware dies for unknown reasons. I had broken hardware in my RedOne (did'n boot anymore) and an unresolvable BS-error with my Epic which lead to an unplanned 5 weeks stay at Red Europe.

I know by experience that this happens with Arri and Sony cameras as well. Are Red cameras unreliable? No. Just good average.

Epic has been fixed and is being over-nighted as I type this. Some hardware bit failed inside.
This is the 6th RED camera I have owned and the first to go down hard like this. My Scarlet(s) were rock solid every day. Red Ones are made like tanks!!
Looks like the shoot will go on as planned...
RED rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
