  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro Announced at WWDC! - It's OFFICIAL!

If a single Xeon E5-2600 v2 could scale to 12 cores x 3GHz x Hyperthreading (24 thread) x 30MB L3 with a TDP of ~130W ... why would you waste space, power, and increase complexity putting another Xeon on the motherboard?

All indications seem to point to a slight decline in Apple wow factor. More people are starting to move to other smart phone platforms. Samsung and others are finding ways to appeal to people and steal some market share away from Apple. The new Mac Pro accomplishes a couple of things. First, an acknowledgement to their higher end user base. Second, whether you like the design or not, Apple has not mailed it in here. They could have gone with a smaller traditional tower or perhaps an iMac Pro with swappable hardware but they decided to get in the lab and create something new, something that might bring some of that wow factor. This is what Apple does best. I applaud them for making this box. I'm sure it would have been a lot easier to scrap the Mac Pro.

My biggest concern still lies with the evolution of the Mac OS. As it has taken on more and more iOS characteristics I just hope it doesn't eventually self destruct into a lackluster OS for professionals. I'm still trying to remain open-minded about where they are heading with it.

Keep in mind that this is FIRST generation. Think of the evolution of the iPhone, iPod Touch, MacBook Air and so on. Apple will refine and improve and third party vendors and developers will innovate to accommodate any constraints. Give it a little time. This is a big deal. Apple could have just walked away.

Well stated!!!

Pretty much everything they discussed in OSX Mavericks is performance based. With Lion and Mountain Lion, we got a lot of touch-screeny things without any touch screens to back it up. With Mavericks, we have smarter CPU management (which helps with battery life as well as overall CPU performance), smarter RAM management, Finder with Tabs and Tagging (basically an asset management system built into the OS; pretty killer even if it's on a "consumer" scale. At the very least this will help train people on good practices for managing file locations and teach the basics and importance of tagging.) and a whole bunch of similar stuff. I didn't see any "iOS-ification" in the presentation of Mavericks, and believe me, I've been saying that iOS and OSX were on a collision course to merge for the past few years.

I'm excited for Mavericks (though I was really hoping they'd give in and call it Cougar, or Bobcat), I'm excited for iOS 7, and I'm excited to see how the new Mac Pro affects our world.

Looks like I stood too close to the parade and got run over by the bandwagon. Enjoy the party guys.
I thought we were being pretty cordial Rob, in spite of your incessant pissing next to the keg. Have a drink, lighten up and feel free to enjoy the party too. Just use the head please.:cheers2:

I agree, I was encouraged by the presentation on Mavericks. That's why I'm keeping an open-mind about it. There seems like some potentially nice under the hood stuff going on.

Wellp, guess I'll be buying the most recent, current iteration of the Mac Pro eventually to hold me over until I find a better option than this new piece of junk they just released! Wow... just wow.

um... they didn't release anything but a little sneak peak info... to preempt the torrents of shit that would have come down on them if WWDC went by with no MacPro news.

Unless something changes drastically, what I understand as of now is that it will have built-in AMD graphics, no PCIE slots, and no internal hard drive slots. It will rely on thunderbolt for expansion. No thanks :)

It will have AMD graphics in at least one version. Because this was a sneak preview, there is no telling what else might also be available. It will have no PCIe slots because slots and cards are legacy designs that they are replacing with a more modern interconnect. It will have no internal hard drive slots because the internal hard disk is living directly on the PCIe3 bus and not via SATA, which is another legacy connector that has a limited form factor and limited speed. And it does not rely on Thunderbolt, it relies on Thunderbolt 2 which has not actually been released and should not be thought of as a simple renaming of the current design, as it is a completely new and evolved design with twice the speed of the original and almost 3 times the speed of things like SAS, eSata, and USB3. In fact, it's pretty close in speed to 12X Infiniband running at single data rate.

In short, if you want what you now have, but want to keep it longer, go right ahead, that's your decision. What Apple is clearly trying to do is map out a future that's not dependent on legacy form factors, designs, speeds, or slots. They're giving you a lot of things you used to need to purchase separately in the form of cards (like video, storage HBA's, and an additional GPU). And they're ultimately making it a lot easier and quicker to add other things. Nobody is saying you have to like it or buy it. But calling it a "piece of junk" only says that you don't really want anything to change, other than to be more of the same. If Jim Jannard thought that way, there wouldn't be a RedUser because there wouldn't be a Red camera. You might want to consider that when looking at a new approach to computer design.

I won't be buying this piece of crap either!!! Can you believe that they built this without Selectron Tubes!?!?

C'mon really? Not yet released, and what they showed was just one iteration of what will probably be a whole product line of custom builds. The world moves on from legacy equipment, I have no clue when I last used the optical drive in my current MacPro tower. Don't need it. Products and tech evolve, get on, get out of the way, or get steamrolled...

FCX, New Mac Pro. Same chain of reactions :
FTF is this ?!? Are you kidding me ? What is this button for ? Ah OK... This is Cool... Wow ! Yeaaah !! Dude, check this out !!

Pretty awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, in that case you may be better off heading to a PC or Hackintosh because I think this new Mac Pro will probably beat out the old Mac Pros in a lot of head to head tests. Maybe not all, as there may be some tasks that work better on a optimized Mac Pro circa 2012 with beefy nvidia GPU but until we see those tests we're just guessing.

I respect and understand that this new Mac may not be everyone's cup of tea though. It's a radical new design and Apple hasn't released customization options yet. That's why we need more time to assess this. Price, modularity, etc all need to be determined.
