  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Post your stills! Skin Tones and Night Scenes

John, those shots look very film-like. What Roger Deakins was thinking I have no idea. But it's his set, his choice. Not my business. ;-)

What is this, a 1080 forum ?
Scarlet, Sigma 35 1.4 at f 1.4 ( this lens rocks ! )
It's too soft for my taste (for 4K and cinema; I suppose it will do for 2K). There is also halation around the highlights which isn't much better than a 50/1.4 from 1960.

dont be hating man, we cant all afford the Flickr Plus membership for full rez images lol
New terms means that free users can upload high-res images. I can't wait to see a lot more RED stills at full resolution. And those girls... wow.

Take a look at the edges, the Sigma at 1.4 holds the sharpness very well.
Test reports on DXO mark and others rate it as good as or better than the Zeiss Distagon T 35mm F/1.4 which is $1800 and has no focus motor.
The still I pulled was shot handheld from a moving row boat at ISO 1500+ as well, which is not optimal for ultimate sharpness.

btw: I don't think that the photo sharing sites limitations are the reason more 4K aren't posted. There are plenty of free alternative ways to do it. It's because Red users for the most part do not finish anything in 4K , and they really don't care when it comes down to it IMO.

1. I agree - sharpness is consistent. So too is halation. ;-) 2. I'm not surprised - Zeiss has released lenses which it should not have. I am not aware of any Leica lens released recently that Leica should regret (faulty units aside). But if this lens is soft, I don't want to see the Zeiss.

I don't see any evidence of motion blur...? Anyway, I'd be surprised if this lens performs acceptably wide-open when stabilized. But as far as the camera goes, the noise seems very disciplined at 1500!

BTW can I ask you something about post-processing? How the hell do you get rid of the purple halos around the lights, especially the cluster at top-centre of frame? Can they be eliminated entirely? DxO Optics Pro (for still cameras) does a good job of minimizing them but I have not been able to eliminate them. I haven't worked with RED footage yet, BTW.

I think you're right. However, I think Dominik might like to know. :-)

I actually like the glow on the lights , it adds some cooler color to the yellow artificial lighting. Artsy Fartsy ;)
I think I was running 1/50 sec exposure, and I picked a sharp frame from the sequence. This was actually from a post stabilized shot, so take that into the sharpness consideration as well.

The glow could be reduced within a comp. I would do a luma key on the brightest lights, blur that matte out to try to match the purple area, and then use that as a matte to do a further chroma key on the blue glow. Hue rotate or desat to suit.
Not something easy, but doable in a compositor like Nuke/Fusion .

Heroin detox scene from a recent film that worked on as DP. Lit with Mathews soft box and Kino flows with a little help from a Mole pepper.

Very nice guys. Don't stop posting.

General question: anybody have still/video comparisons on how using daylight vs tungsten (+ a filter) affects the look of skin tones.

From a quick read through these forums, I gather the Red is very robust at capturing scenes lit w/ daylight.

A different flavor this time: these were captured at night w/ a light kit, w/ an Epic and Zeiss lenses. I DP'ed in Thailand. Not color corrected yet.:
1st image 2800k or something like that. And I believe the 2nd one might have been daylight balanced. DOn't remember.

Here are a few stills from my stuff. I'm not technical in the slightest, so couldn't tell you about how I achieved these results. They looked good to me so I pressed record.

Super clean.

Here's a couple of night shots from a short I shot last weekend...

EDIT: Man, it looked dark on my monitor in REDCINE-X, so I bumped up the FLUT a little and now it looks a little too light. Just imagine it's a tad darker.

Anyway, shot on Rokinon Cine 35mm 1.4 @ around 2.8 at 640 ISO.

And the project is cropped for 2.35...so these have some unused space.

Ben love the frames :)
