Is it possible to purchase a Red Scarlet Dragon Outright?

Hi. I am new and trying to decide which Red to buy. Is it possible to purchase a Red Scarlet Dragon outright?

I am trying to decide between a Red Scarlet and a Red Epic. The problem is I need all of the items that amount to the Red Scarlet kit too. A Red Dragon would be perfect for what we are doing and better suited for our budget.

No, it's not possible to purchase a Scarlet-Dragon outright. At this point the only path is to purchase a Scarlet-X and order the upgrade to Dragon. Also, be aware that Dragon upgrades aren't shipping yet.

Dragon isn't shipping yet and won't for a while....there will probably be a scarlet dragon for sale at one point but that will happen after everything is upgraded.....
not sure how a red dragon would fit your budget best? if you are interested in shooting sooner then later get an epic, shoot now and get in line for the dragon upgrade right away....or buy a dragon epic M now and wait until it ships....

For stills, Epic-X & Scarlet-X share the the same resolution except some high speed shoooting modes for Slow Motion.
Therefore,you can buy Scarlet-X when it is available.
If your clients call for other delivery formats, then I would buy an Epic Camera.

Thanks Jay. I really want to shoot at least good 4k video and pull good looking stills from it at the same time. I do not want to just switch back and forth to slow 4k for stills. I can not find any stills that were taking while shooting 4k at the faster Red Scarlet rate for good video. I have seen stills from the new Canon 1D C, but I am not sure what the frame rate was. I think Red is the way to go, but I wonder how they compare in this regard.

I read about using a faster shutter speed, but then the video would not look good. I am photographer just starting to learn video.

As a point of reference for a differing opinion, many Scarlet owners are or will be happily upgrading to Epic-X. Hardly an obsolete technology!

Wait till Dragon comes out. It will be like appearing of moon among 1000's of stars. Dragon's appearance will make rest every thing look faded . Lets not ignore the fact about what happened to Red One. Red one was the best till Epic x appeared and when Epic X appeared we all know (not my opinion) Red One lost its value(to an extent that one guy here on red user was asking for Red One to be given to him for free).
Eric, you have answered your question yourself by giving Canon Mark ii example. Open any site (website of those who are selling both 5d mark ii and mark iii) their biggest selling point for mark iii is its big improvement over mark ii. Now after seeing comparison between the two (mark ii and mark iii) why would anyone with sane mind will buy mark ii(unless money is the issue and if money is the issue it should not be used as defense to support old technology). All cameras are great even Red one today can shoot fantastic images but I am establishing my career in the movie industry and I have a strong hunger and desire for quality and so does Red and any other company and that is why we are continuously improving/evolving.
Terry, I welcome every one's opinion ;-). Mate, I mentioned about those Scarlet x owners who will be upgrading to Scarlet Dragon, they will not have option to upgrade.Again when these would be Epic x owners will see butter smooth images from Dragon sensor specially in low light, they will realize what they are missing. Dragon is going to be above and beyond the current Epic x sensor and that is why Red is taking so long to release it. Images from dragon will be mouth watering.

Come on guys with stunning RAW recording on Canon DSLR's we should seriously reconsider our thoughts about going Dragon. Why? It is soo complicated, worth tons of money... Let's have some good old times with nice conventional HD, it was so cool being there! I even start missing my DV cameras now.

Tony it is easy - if you are shooting mostly indy movies like drama or so - Scarlet Dragon is no-brainer. High DR and low-light will save you lots of time and money on set.
If you shooting commercials and music videos Epic-X is no brainer as well. Because of slomo. And you will (or you should) have plenty of lights on set anyway.
If you have money Epic Dragon is no brainer either. Cause it does everything.

I thank everyone for responding, the information was very helpful. I think I will go with the Red Scarlet and upgrade to the Red Scarlet Dragon. I think for me it will be the best option and more suitable for my budget. I will be able to shoot 5K with high enough frame rates and still be able to pull good stills out of it.

For stills beware!

While the current Scarlet and Epic have identical sensors and are both capable shooting 5K stills, it sounds like you actually want to shoot motion and have the ability to pull out some stills. The Scarlet can only shoot the full 5K sensor at max of 12 FPS. Keep that in mind...

Dragon changes this as the Scarlet Dragon is "only" 5K, while the Epic Dragon is 6K - a huge difference for stills...

So I also recommend to buy the Epic-MX now and get in the line for upgrade to Dragon...

Scarlet at 4k still makes better stills than a canon SLR no doubt. So any of the red cameras that are selling today are more then plenty to pull still from. But if you want the the best option avialable then you get an epic, then upgrade to dragon when it starts shipping. But I think the quality that you can pull from an epic or scarlet today is more than plenty to keep clients happy... Basically there is no non red option for quality stills from video that matches even close to the price vs quality of the scarlet today.

It's good enough for the higher end of the fashion industry, so I think it can be used for most still jobs that does not demand full format camera or such.

and here is the comparsion alexa frame upscaled to the same resolution... not as sharp, not as clean if you look in the hair for example, then alexa looks like poor debayering and noise:

So basically, if you buy a scarlet you got more than you need. If you get an epic you have the top shelf product as of today that you can trade in for a dragon. If you wait for dragon you might save a few coins but you also miss out on the learning curve so my advice is to get on the train as soon as possible and only you can decide if the extra epic money is worth it for you, it's all depending on what kind of jobs you will gain from having the camera. I think to be safe any of these cameras should be paid of within a couple of months or you do better renting. As the development goes quite rapidly for cameras at the moment. As other stated here all ready, dragon is not the end of line, it's probably just the first little camera that comes out from RED with a post MX sensor, when they got the dragon out the door I have no doubt that Jarred and Jim's next step is to see how big of a dragon sensor they can make... and then that camera is probably the camera you would want for stills But that is probably not going to be happen before next nab at least. All this is me guessing ofcourse.
