  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Looking for anyone, who has real world experience, with these two, at least, quite different alternatives. There is the flexibility of the bug lights.
Taking off the reflector allowing you to:
Put on a soft tube
Drop them into a china ball
Slap them into a source 4... HMI still has that nice, clean "edge" that comes from a strong single
source. And of course you can soften it down.

The , there are the Nilas (Boxer, Varsa kit and Mini), with:
the Cool temp ( within reason closer placement),
On board V/Au++ mount power
increased power over last year's version (reported 15%)
Form factor
Longevity & Durability (reported 20K hrs-vs. re-lamping Jokers)=Cost of ownership

There are other differences, that can be listed, but hands on experiences, etc. would seemingly be useful to share.

Thank you very much

I was really impressed with the Nilas at NAB. However, I do have the Jo-Leko, Softube and Profoto adapters (for soft boxes) for my Bugs and it makes for a REALLY versatile system. Softube is AWESOME!

I think it comes down to the fact that these are two different tools for different things. but if you do not have enough scratch for both, the question becomes which system will give you the most bang for your buck?

I am waiting for the zylight f8 to come out in a couple of weeks....the output looks incredible and I believe it should work more like a classic fresnel compared to the nila....I don't like the multiple bulbs and the slide in lenses....the zylight has a Battery option on the back as well....and the form factor/ size seems hard to beat....

actually Nick, I'm betting you already know what you're gonna do. just looking to see if anything out there might change your mind...Again. :)

I thought I knew what I was going to do when I was going to purchase 5 of either of those.

Can't really explain how long and hard I looked at different lighting options. And if you asked me a month ago I'd be purchasing Nila Varsas and Boxers. However, I've gone rogue and am way off the rails.

Stay tuned. I'll share soon.

Hi Paul,

Did U C Mitch's link, from Abelcine below?

""The Varsa is a hard punch light with holographic etched lens plates to control the beam. The Zylight is a fresnel lens focusing light. For brightest punch the Nila easily overpowers the Zylight. For control of the light projection the Zylight is far better than the Nila. It really depends on what is important to you." - Mitch Gross

Seems the NILA is more designed as an HMI replacement, wheras the Zylight is a controllable fresnel, without the same punch as the other two-although no real world experience here. Clearly everything has its best use, of course.

Thank you very much

thanks for that info...i actually spoke with someone at ablecine about the nila...i will hopefully check them both out at the upcoming show in LA and make my decision then...i believe the nila without lens is much more powerful then the zylight f8 but at a tighter spot...once you add the lenses it evens out.....i am concerned about mulitple shadows from the nila....
and i have to say the zylight f8 just looks amazing...simple to use, wireless built in....weather proof....i don't like the lens thing with the nila....although i would probably use it with mostly one lens and a soft box anyway....but really it is hard to buy lights without seeing the quality and output....
i am also interested in the hexolux http://hexolux.com which isn't shipping yet either....as much as i love my LED panels....i really prefer the single light source....

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the intriguing response. Since the Joker Group But is closing fairly soon and Cine gear is this coming weekend. Could yu share your current favorite, at this time? Especially if that fav is going to be at the show.

Thank you very much

I'll be speaking and shooting in London and missing Cinegear this year. The lights I'm talking about are currently not available and won't be at Cinegear. They should be available later this year however, hopefully within the next 3 months.

In terms of my favorite lights I like both K5600 and Nila. I've used them both. I'm not real fond of certain things that HMI and this particular level of LED technology represents. However, I like the units. I like most of the standard workhorses out there. Mole, ARRI, etc... Even dig the Profoto HMI lights.

Like is not love though, hence my sniffing leading me in a different direction.

I will try to go to cine gear and check out and compare (as much as that is possible) nila, zylight and hexolux....whichever gives me the most output from v batteries, accepts modifiers (that I am used to from still) and has single shadows gets my money....

I sense plasma.

Not plasma, although I love what the Hive guys (and now others) have done with that tech. However, there's a limit to what that does.

I have gone down a deep dark hole to find some interesting tech.

For me it would be more interesting to learn what folks actually want out of a lighting unit?

Color balance? Features? Accessories? Output?

I know what I want in a light.....clean (high cri) daylight balanced, focusable, nice and punchy single light source powerful enough to use modifiers incl umbrellas and soft boxes or to bounce off flats, ceilings,....cool to touch, small (not too small) and light and battery powered...wireless control is a plus, variable color temp nice but not necessary....

me too.. though I actually also need big sources sometimes

Well it sounds like we want the same things more or less. The best I can say now is that within 4-6 weeks approximately there will be something of interest to look at.

You can't just put that out there like that! I am looking to buy in about 4-6 weeks (sooner would be better)...give us something!

Believe me if I could I would. Considering I was going to drop about $30k on lighting recently I was much in the same situation. There is nothing I can "give" at the moment other than saying "stay tuned". Something different is coming.
