  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

GTX Titan and Mercury Playback Engine

So I just built a Windows computer with the GTX Titan, installed the latest drivers from the website and when I open premiere and check out the mercury playback setting it still says software only and it won't let me change it.

Do I have to add this to the list of acceptable cards manually?

I am away from my computer until tonight, so I won't be able to give much more info or try anything until then...

Yeah, you need to add it to the list located here. Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS6\cuda_supported_cards.txt

If you need the exact spelling of the card as seen by your computer, in the same folder there is a file you can run called GPUSniffer.exe. (sometimes it only comes up for a split second, so have your print screen key ready!)
I would also advise that you go into the nvidia control panel and under the manage 3D settings, select the program settings tab and add Premiere. Then under the Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration, set that to compatibility mode.

Works like a charm, but I hear in the new CC version, you can allow whatever card you want without these steps. Which would be nice :)

Awesome, I'll try that when I get home and I'll test out those other settings you mentioned. At about midnight last night I was in no mood to start fiddling with settings, the Laphroaig didn't help either. Thanks for the help.

Looks like you got the help you need. When you finish installing everything, let us know what kind of playback you are getting with your GPU. 1/2 Res smooth or a little choppy?
 
I doubt RCX makes use of the CUDA cores on our GPUs. I have a 680 in my tower now and I still get 1/8th, maybe up to 1/4th playback in RCX as before. Is there a setting to enable to the GPU? But R3D footage debayer uses CPU or RR power, not GPU from what the guys at Black Magic told me in a call the other day.

In Premiere I can "almost" get 1/2 res with a single track of video. Without a RR, the debayer is just too slow.

I have yet to try 1/4th editing with a full sequence over and hour or heavy effects.

I have a Red Rocket and a GTX Titan. Just need to setup a server tomorrow - it has all my footage - and link it to my computer and I can get some tests going. It's been a week of building, researching and calibrating. But by the end of this weekend, my editing bungalow will be fully realized. Of course, my scarlet is out right now being transformed into an epic so I'll have to use old footage...
 
That's the beautiful thing about RED, old footage is new footage.

For PP playback a single Titan will excel!

"Finally, for customers using configurations containing multiple GPUs, Premiere Pro CC can use all of them during export (but not during playback) so customers who require the fastest possible encode times will be able to leverage all the GPUs they own."

I didn't know they updated multiple GPU support. Is that in the latest update or something in the future?

Now what do people recommend here? should I just add another 680 and go SLI to get the most out of premiere? or sell my 680 and get a single Titan?

The problem is how much of a difference is it in PP! I have been looking for some numbers but can't find any solid ones. If it is a few seconds it is not worth the hassle IMO.

So in Premiere Pro if I pull up a clip in the viewer, I get 1/2 Res to play nicely; full is super choppy.

In the timeline, if I render, I get full res to play nicely (this is including green screening and adding a new background with movement).

This is 4K HD footage, 6:1, 29.97fps

Full computer Specs:
Hexacore i7
Asus Rampage IV Extreme
32 Gigs 1866mhz RAM
GTX Titan
Red Rocket

When my scarlet gets back to me as an Epic (HOPEFULLY SOON!) I'll try 5K.
 
Premiere will not use more than one GPU for hardware Mercury playback.
There is a new alpha version of RCX that does use GPU acceleration for effects (alchemy, unsharp mask, film look, etc), and maybe scaling operations and the like. Certainly better than CPU performance.
Also, this alpha supports SDI output on AJA and Blackmagic cards.
