  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I hate AVCHD...R3D files works like a charm, but AVCHD is pure crap. And the LCD monitor is really too small on that Sony cam.
 
There's a pl adapter to e-mount from sony and another from a third part company.

Pfff.... similar price and sensor area, sure, but that is where the comparison comes to a screeching halt.

And why the heck would they use an SSD when SD cards are fast enough? (other than to liken themselves to a certain other camera)
 
As much as I try, I just can't find a reason to get excited over this camera. I own the NEX-5 mirrorless SLR camera. Nice stills, compact size, overheats and locks up. The E-Mount lenses are a nice idea, but current offerings from sony are the suck. I own the 18-200 zoom and it's a piece of shit. In all honesty, it's a fair kit lens for the NEX-5 or the cheapie NEX-VG10 camcorder. I have also used the VG10, which isn't bad for what it is and not priced bad considering it comes with the 18-200. This FS100 is just, well... "meh". It's really Sony's answer to the Panasonic AF10x line. And it will do well there. However, I think I would choose the Panasonic AF100 (another camera I just can't seem to get excited about). I like their onboard video processing and color rendition more than what Sony is doing. There are also tons more lens and mount adapter options for the m4/3 system right now. Not that it's a big issue, there are E-Mount to PL and most other mounts out there. I bought an E-Mount to Nikon G adapter on eBay and it works great. I made my own E-Mount to PL since I didn't want to wait for someone else to do it. Worked pretty good for my second foray into making a mount adapter, but it didn't lock as tight as it should on the E-Mount side. I have since chucked it into the scrap bin and replaced it with an aftermarket one which works much better and was under $100.

If I want to shoot lower quality video ~25mbps or so, I'll reach for my Panny GH2. I have bought and returned several m4/3 cameras over the past 2 years and almost gave up on the format. The GH2 has me liking the format finally for stills. Overall a nice camera and the 24p HD video is pretty darn good for a camera that cost me < $1K with kit lens. Can't complain. But I doubt I will use the GH2 much, if at all, once I have Epic in my hands. I agree that they're totally different beasts, but with as portable as Epic is, why shoot anything less? I'm already used to my Mamiya medium format kit anyway, which is similar in size to Epic, just weighs a bit less. If I need smaller, I'll grab the wife's point and shoot camera. Which for that, I got her the new Olympus XZ-1. Love it, with the exception of the non-integrated lenscap fail. Oh, well, can't have it all.

Haven't touched the NEX-5 since getting the GH2. Going to put it on ebay soon. It may be small, but it's not pocketable since it still uses 35mm lenses. The 16mm pancake lets me pocket it, but that's nuts and impractical unless I'm shooting indoors in close quarters. No integrated flash and the included one is a joke -- as is the proprietary accessory system. They need a 32mm F2.0 pancake, then it would be an awesome go-anywhere camera. Alas, I've given up waiting.

RED really needs to get the Epic-S on the market ASAP!
