I am proud to announce that we have won the award for Best Cinematography at the Beverly Hills Film Festival.

This one came as a bit of a surprise to me as the competition was pretty damn stiff.

I was off doing a bit of shooting and arrived about 15 minutes after the award was handed out, but I'd like to thank Paul Ellington (who had a screenplay in the festival) for accepting the award for me, and also saying a few nice words. Thanks Paul!

Congratulations to the whole team. We'll certainly be doing some work together in the future.

I'd also like to thank my 1st AC Kevin Barry all the hard work. Tight shooting schedule and we needed all the hustle to get every setup in.

Production Details:
camera = Red Scarlet-X #316 "Skully"
format = REDCODE Raw 6:1 - 4K/24fps
glass = Various modified still lenses and a Duclos Cine-Modded Leica 60mm f/2.8 R.

Shooting Notes:

I self operated (I'm one of those DPs) and shot mostly between f/1.8-f2.8. Some interesting personal highlights include a 30 foot wild focus pull, riding a sled during our blue screen shoot to mimic the chaos of falling through the sky, rigging a vertical slider move to "lift off" into the clouds, and wild pulls with actors up in harnesses swinging through the air on blue screen. Towards the end of production I also created a matte painting for the hole that "Laura" decides to return to. Fun stuff.

A couple BTS shots and grabs:

Really big thanks to Jim, Jarred, Brent, Nick, and the rest of the Red Team. Thank you for making a complete digital cinema camera system and one I prefer to shoot on no less.

I'll add some shots from the festival once they get sent my way.

The film looks AMAZING! Great job on the cinematography Phil. When will we be able to see it online you think? Your work is great.

Thank you guys. This festival stuff is pretty new to me, but I have to admit driving home this one got to me a bit in a good way.

I don't know what the end game is for Illusion just yet. In a world where youtube exists and festivals that don't except submissions that have been "released" elsewhere with the intent of selling the property, Illusion is currently existing in the festival circuit.

My next couple projects I'm self producing will be going to ODEMAX however. So everybody will see them and see them the way I intend them shown (or at least have the opportunity to).

Big congrats Phil. Great to see one of the nicest and most sharing redusers getting the recognition he deserves and "climbing up the ladder". Keep going man and keep us posted!

Cheers Sergio. I'm certainly working my butt off:) This was shot about two dozen projects ago (14 months ago) and it was VFX heavy, but I'll have to dig up the storyboards/thumbnails I made prior to shooting. Some neat notes if I recall correctly. Lots of problem solving.

Congrats Phil, I was happy to have DIT'd/asst edited on this!

Thanks for the hard work Joe. Never again will there be mag runs with a hill like that :)

Yes, nice. Any trailers or a couple of 4K scenes available?
