Dragon Update

Dear Jarred, I have two EPIC-X waiting to be upgraded to Dragon, and I am planning to use the dragons since 20th, June for my movie <Beijing Dream 3D>, I've almost get everything ready except the dragon, will I be able to get the upgrade before 20th, June? Or I have to shot the movie with MXs? It will be a big pity for me if I can not use dragons.

I doubt it. Remember that epic-m customers are in line before you.

Any chance MX users will be able to upgrade to the IR cut OLPF or does it throw everything else off? If the IR OLPF costs ~$200 (a little more than a Hot Mirror), I can't imagine every REDuser not jumping on it.

As for the differences, would (could) this not be as simple as selecting "REDcolour 4" vs. "REDcolour 4 IR" for the colour space?

RED DRAGON

Hi,
I presume DRAGONS will start FLYING end July this year....:undecided:

It already has IR cut in the OLPF sandwich you have now. What do you mean ?

Correct... both are interrelated. Black Points and Clipping points change when you turn the voltage levels. Individual color response changes with different voltage gains.. it is all connected.

We also have 2 OLPF's now remember, the new IR cut one plus and the existing recipe, which both have their own color science.

Graeme is on top of it though.. There isn't alot of exploration going on anymore, and the adjustments remaining are just slight modifications to get back to base as things swing each way from the hardware adjustments.

I might be reading into this wrong. Just seems like the new/Dragon one has substantially different (better?) IR filtration.

The IR filter On the Dragon will indeed be different and hopefully able to control it better. I doubt you will be able to slap this onto the MX sensor as it is most likely specific to the sensor. Also, how easy is it to remove this by the user anyhow?

Why so late.........

While I disagree with the timeframe, (I could see this beginning early to mid June if I interpret the traffic on Reduser from Jim, Jarred and Brent correctly) I think the reason will be because they want to release everything at once and in good working order. For that reason, I think that any of the three main components to the Dragon release... sensor, color science, and Redcine X Pro... can hold up the beginning of the sensor upgrade program.

Zhang,

Since I don't want to sound preachy I will simply say that we all want the Dragon to work up to Jim and jarred's specs before releasing. I would hope that films such as Prometheus, Spiderman, Hobbit, Flight, 42 and Great Gatsby, would make you feel alright with shooting your film with MX.

Remember it is like waiting to shoot a film becuase Kodak is coming out with the next T grain stock....

I AM looking forward to Dragon but I have a film starting in a month and will shoot MX.... Let Graemme do his magic...

It is probably about time for an update.

We have been doing lens coverage test on the Dragon while we are waiting.. and lens coverage is surprisingly good so far.. Hopefully I can grab Brook Evin and Phil one of these days soon with a van full of glass so they can put together some sort of master Dragon-Lens-matrix. The specs and assumptions of coverage don't always match real life, so nothing is better than getting the actual lenses and putting them on the camera and taking a look.

Hey Jarred,

Can't wait for Dragon. However I'm glad you guys are taking the necessary time getting the sensor perfected. Too hold me over, any update on this master Dragon-lens-matrix? Looking at investing in a few new pieces of glass in the near future, particularly the new compact Canon Cine Zooms 15.5-47 & 30-105. Any idea if those will cover the Dragon at full 6K?

Thanks!

While I can't answer the Dragon side - I can tell you that the CN-E zooms from Canon do not cover FF35, unlike the CN-E primes. I haven't had the chance to test them on FF35 (yet), so it is too early to judge how much of the sensor they will actually cover. Optically and mechanically, however, they are an amazing lenses. But for this very reason I am going the prime route (as soon as the 35 is out of testing...)

Looks like none of the canon zooms will cover 6k at any normal aspect ratio. This is where 5.5k and being able to specify arbitrary frame sizes could come in very handy. Those two lightweight canon zooms you mention come very close to covering 6kHD (32.2mm image circle) so perhaps they will just not cover at the widest focal lengths but will work once zoomed in slightly, and worst case you shoot with a little vignetting and set markers for framing and crop in post.

Agree. It's just a pity not a disappointment. MX is already nearly perfect... while dragon may be more than perfect.

silent they are...harder they hit. Waiting for awesomeness...
