GL Optics Test: Re-housed Contax Set

Nan is a good guy, recomended for his skills an work. We have a lens of his here.

Those Contax images look great. Im well impressed.

Patrick,

Your set of lenses look great and your images look stunning! Thanks for sharing. Quick question, after the rehouse, do the lenses extend/telescope when you focus?

Can you give more details about the mechanics of the lens after the rehouse? What was the turn around time?

The lenses do not telescope when focusing. I mean not externally. Nan's housing creates a shell that remains fixed throughout focusing allowing for a clip on matte box to be run no problem. Plus the reinforced fronts make hanging any filters or matte box no problem.

Turn around was a little over a month I think.

How do one get in contact with GL Optics (Nan)? Anyone know if he does Leica-r too? :)
I'd send my Leica R lens to him for rehousing already, will be come up very soon, once I got it will test and sharing here...

He told me that the Leica-R design is done in about 3 months... Looking forward to se yours! Looks like a winner so far (if they're remotely resembling these Contax-ones) :)

Hey mates, This may be an unintelligent question but I got to ask it:

What do those images that Patrick posted have to do with the lenses? I understand that he shot the images with the lenses and that the cinematography is beautiful there. However, the difference between just any random lens and the Contax lenses he used is - slight color shift, sharpness, etc.

My understanding is that with the reduced resolution of those stills and with a slight amount of color correction, you could get that look with any lens.

It's mostly the cinematography, am I right?

Hey guys sorry about the delayed response but I didn't have any time to take photos yesterday. I took a few this morning in my kitchen.

Like I said before I really like them so far. We will see how they hold up but the feel solid.

Nice balance between still and cinema sets.

I got a discount for going all in on a set but I think prices are around $600-700 depending on the lens. He does do newer Zeiss glass as well last I heard.
Yes it is more than Duclos but it isn't stupid expensive either if you need 5 lenses ready for day to day crew use.

I've shot quite a bit with Ultra Primes and these are pretty much identical in terms of size and weight. I think they go perfect with the current body.
