This post might be a touchy subject but I thought I'd vent a little.

Before I was on reduser or RED even existed, my home has been dvxuser. I've been there from day one with my trusty Canon XL-1 and brand new Panny DVX-100. Such a great source of knowledge on all topics of video and an all around great place to talk about cameras, discuss issues and ideas about the DVX and more. But lately, the attitude over there has been rubbing me the wrong way. It kinda feels as if once you go RED, you're exiled from dvxuser. It's like you're no longer welcomed there. I just find it silly since they are both Jarred's sites, and where many of us met him. It also seems like you can't even mention RED there without the DSLR crowd going crazy on you.

Yeah, I'm a RED guy now, but I still have my Panasonics for event work and still use those quite often. I just don't understand why we can't coexist lol!

Anyone else notice this?

I remember my DVX100 Andromeda

Another DVXuser man prior to the Red days. I don't think the animosity is towards REd in itself. Its a different price range crowd mainly- not talking about talent, amazing talent over in the forum. They criticize mainly because of price. Being Guerilla implies very tight to no budget productions and the dvxuser main posters are people that cannot think about redmags, red rockets, redvolts x6, extra modules, etc. They want Af100, dslr kind of budget solutions.

What they don't get is that a Scarlet is right now an amazing deal. Its the dvx user dream camera, in fact. Yes, low light is important, but redraw, 4K, coupled with Portable led lights is another championship altogether. There are just not too many Scarlet users there, and they should be there to help "spread the love!"

If you dont feel welcomed at DVXuser forum, then don't go there or mentioning RED camera there. Each forum have their crowd and their own camera preferences. I don't see any reason why we should bring up the topic of why people dont like people who owned RED camera in DVXusers and vice versa. And also please don't bashing people trying to hack 5D to shoot raw. there is nothing wrong with people doing that. I perhaps welcome the idea that people are coming up with new way to utilise their camera instead of accepting the existing features that Canon gave them.

No bashing intended, really. I think from a technical perspective it's really interesting stuff.

I guess what I'm getting at is that the erra of complaining about your gear is over. I've seen great things shot on DSLRs, DV, VHS, Beta and so on. Today we live in a world that high quality tools are very widely available to us, even to those on a budget. So many people are trying to improve their gear or "hacking" it, rather than improving their craft. Yeah, a hacked camera might be cool, but how many real jobs would you trust it on? I've always followed the concept of work with what you have or can afford, do good work, upgrade when you can. 15 years ago I started with my VHS-C and Mini-DV cameras, now I'm about to trade up to an Epic.

Always found Dvinfo a much friendlier place than dvxuser. Not so camera biased. I tried to solve some problems I had with an AF101 I bought for a specific project, but I really felt attacked for complaining about the short comings of that camera over at dvxuser.
Good thing I didn't mention I had an Epic then;-)

Yeah I had an AF-100 for a year as we waited for Scarlet. Was a nice camera minus the codec.
So true, terrible banding and 25P looked very "stuttery" compared to any other 25P camera I´ve shot with. But it was fun to throw all kinds of lenses at it.

I think I remember that thread! Did you post a short test clip that was a pan across a large door/window that caused the infamous 'judder'.

I have been a longtime member there, have my Red Epic in my "sig", and often wade into threads bashing Red to at least try and provide an even view of things.

It can get stupid at times.

Camera biased but... a decade ago. Times have changed.

No idea about Chris Hurd now. Something I know though. A tyrant webmaster then, surrounded of yes-posters or your argument would immediately be labeled as trolling by the only moderator seen there :D your account hierarchically banned but your ban made topic to be discussed in a special sub-forum where you could read but not post :P i.e. more focused to build up alone the inner circle of his own; rather than Jarred ever -- open to make dvxusers, new friends (from where Jim himself popped up) and not only among sponsors or manufacturers reps. Take a shot where one is now, and the other ;-)

Indeed. If you defend the founder there, you risk to be attacked in the next post :D

Funny, that was exactly how I felt about Barry Green when I raised some questions about the quality of the Af101

No, I didn't post that clip, but I remember the thread and participated in it

As one of the mods over at DVXUser, I'll simply say that any forum is a reflection of the most active posters/members. Over time, as more and more cameras have come out and the technology has become more accessible at the lower end, DVXUser has become much more of a "camera forum" than a "filmmaking forum." Eager "believers" are told (and convinced) by some that their chosen camera is "better" than another, and they feel the need to preach that position. It turns the forum into a pissing contest about cameras, with hardly a craft-focused discussion in sight.

And since REDUser does not allow discussions of other camera systems (for the most part), the focus here is as much about work and craft as it is technology and gear.

Come on, don't compare Barry with dvinfo. Barry lets you to have the right of public reply to begin with. AFAIK he never touches (!) your posts nor hides himself behind private messages or answering you by mail what he is not interested to be discussed in a public forum. Barry has been accused so many times to be a shill, in any case everyone knows his professional connections. He has free voice and he gives to you the same tools as well. Even between friends. Can this serve as example that he also is a free spirit?

Nevertheless, Barry has spent hours of his dvxuser posting to defend RED as much as Panasonic products, if necessary when people simply start (on dvxuser!) to bash RED, Jarred and Jim with no other reason than no money for RED accessories as Sérgio very well pointed out. Moreover, when necessary I've had discussions with Barry where I disagree with his Lady and he never cut my throat. On the contrary, this has made my respect on him. Comes to my mind when both of us spent a whole Christmas somewhere in the middle of last decade to trade different POVs exactly on the dvinfo webmaster's practices. Even though, Barry could also be a listener then. Pardon me for my immodesty and trust me, he would never commit abuse of similar kind, because he is a decent and exceptional professional, individual as well. Another example was the episode Shannon Rawls, where he had to defend himself of public accusations. That could have affected his reputation but... he's used to win with arguments whether we fully agree or not. We both share the same aversion to coward ad hominem attacks with no point to back up. Does Barry have a legion of yes-men? Yes, but the red-heads here have no less, though : ) Barry looks for consensus as much as possible, something in common both parties may hold together; learning with them, not fearing any sort of debate. BTW, this has made school with Jarred and by consequence with RED, Jim included, IMHO.
