I am booked to travel to Haiti next month to shoot with my EPIC. The shoot is 5 days and will complete a documentary already in progress. I have a lot of experience shooting Docs in the US but I know I need some advice from those who have traveled to places like this to shoot.

What am I going to get wrong?

What simple things should I bring to help my shoot?

Any suggestions on eating, sleeping, etc?

Safety?

Gear?

What questions do I not even know to ask?

Thanks in advance for any input and suggestions. Chris

Make sure you got the proper paper work. You probably need a carnege and such for the gear. Or it all might end in the customs when trying to get the stuff into the country.

Make sure you have a good fixer- contact, liaison. They will take care of you and keep you safe.

You need extra batteries + charger and make sure you are fully charged by charging every time and everywhere you find electricity... Bring nutritional bars, dried fruit snacks.. You will need to bring your own water.. trust me on this... anytime you travel outside of the US..the water elsewhere messes with you. And finally bring one of those Multi-tool set. Wish I was going as part of the crew. Cheers!

I asked someone I know who went to Haiti a few years back, he sent me these links. It was also suggested that you might be better off to have these questions clarified by the organizers of your shoot rather than an internet forum. Another suggestion was to consider anything you bring as a potential gift to thank those who might help you out. Not including your Epic, of course ;-)
Hope it helps, Jeff

though haiti is extremely impoverished, you'll be able to find bottled water and safe food to eat. most people thing you should stay away from the meats, and eat veggies...not true. you are much more likely to get sick from a salad than a chicken as they wash the greens with dirty water. eat cooked food and you will be fine. do not buy the street fruits (the people selling fruit on the streets) as they usually wash those in the gutter. definitely do not use your standard dirty amps down there for lighting...a 20 amp breaker means nothing in Haiti...so go lite on the draw. finally remember that Haiti and the DR are only separated by a fence so hop it and sit on the beach your last day in the Dominican!
dont get mugged! but if you do they prob wont hurt you haha...a buddy of mine got mugged by the same group twice in one night! he was all "are you guys serious??? you litterally just took all my money an hour ago!"
