  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Why are people selling their Scarlet so cheap?

Im I missing something? I've seen prices as low as $5000 for a used Scarlet brain, how is that possible? You do know that you can upgrade to a brand new Epic X for $9500 right? So If I buy your Scarlet for 5K, transfer it to my name, and upgrade it to a brand new Epic X, it means, I am getting a brand new camera, an EPIC! for $14.500.

I believe that the upgrade to Dragon should have stopped the price drop of the Scarlet, not the opposite.
 
At some point in the not too distant future you will be able to buy an Epic Dragon for $24,000. Compared to trading/upgrading a Scarlet twice, first too Epic ($9500), then to Dragon ($9500) for $19K, the difference is exactly $5K. That may have something to do with the pricing. Not saying it makes sense but it may factor in.

This has happened before. Prices will go back up and level out soon enough. Everyone is just trying to raise money for new toys and Pre-order deposits on cool stuff announced at NAB. Everything is selling below market value right now. If you can afford to buy a used Scarlet Brain for $5k, do it, you'll be able to sell it for $6k in 6 months.
 
Frankly, speaking as someone who just bought a used Scarlet brain for about $5K, if it wasn't for the Epic-X or Scarlet Dragon upgrade paths, I'd expect the price of a used Scarlet to be even lower. When you factor in the ownership transfer and inspection costs, plus shipping to and from RED, you are getting close to $6K...for a brain that sells for $7950 brand new with a 1 year warranty. So at $5K + transfer, the brain has only really depreciated about 27%...pretty good IMO for a used camera in a field where products typically don't hold their value very well. If you pay much more than $5K, you might as well consider buying new...
 
Good point there Tom, that's something most forget about I suspect!

but the Upgrade path is now doing wonders for Scarlet owners and painful for would-be-owners...
Actually it's just nice being a Red owner!

Uh - the current price in the RED store is for Epic Dragon-M (the hand machined version) is $29K. And, if I recall correctly (I'll go back to look), the $24K price was actually announced.

I remember seeing that too, Terry...pretty sure you are correct.
 
$30k I can understand as Epic owners paid about $20k and then there's the upgrade$10k. But that's brain only and most people sell with sideSSD and mount....

Ok, the brain has cost 5k and then you pay 19k for upgrades... but you still only have a brain...

As Michael says, perhaps a few Scarlet owners are "emptying their closet" and can afford to take the hit on the Scarlet, in order to upgrade early.

Either way its good for Red owners...

Well - to compare apples to apples, the OP said $5K for brain only and the upgrade pricing and new pricing discussed is for brain only. If you sell Scarlet brain for $5K and buy new Epic Dragon brain for $24K, it's the same cost as the two upgrades to the brain. What's your point? If you already have a Scarlet and want to end up at Epic Dragon, selling Scarlet is one way to do it. Not sayting it's the best way, just a thought as to why the pricing might be what it is.
 
I'd also suggest external forces, ie: Blackmagic. Also a lot of people seem to buy a Scarlet and then wonder why nobody will rent it from them, might still owe on the camera and just NEED to sell it.

In LA, just three months ago, a couple of the large rental houses would not even take an Epic, let alone a scarlet into their rental pool, citing shelved inventory and purchase price to entry. BM and Magic Lantern have placed alternatives, in the marketplace, such that Scarlets" Buyers pool has contracted and will face, therefore multifactorial downward price adjustments, for awhile. This yearend could see another pretty good notch or two down on new Red cameras, across the board, as well.

My point was that Angel was asking about the relative absurdity of the pricing of used Scarlets and I agreed with the third poster. I questioned your pricing of $24k which i couldnt find on the Red.com site.
I was asking if people bought Brain only in Scarlet form? Epic and Dragon perhaps as its an upgrade path, but Scarlet is a starting point and even if someone has all the accessories from another camera platform then they will need Red equipment to make it work.

Thats all.

thats what I thought Brett, but then I don't have the energy to defend my corner as I don't really feel I have a corner? Just a wondering where a price of $24k came from as $29k makes sense from an upgrade point of view to Epic and Scarlet owners. However I see that much above $5k when adding Red check and change of ownership means you've almost bought a new Scarlet...

I can see there will be a number of BT Scarlets coming to market soon if we upgrade our units to Epic...

Do you know i'm going to break my own rules and respond to that.. First, if your reply isnt at the very least, aggressive, if not abusive, then I don't know what is.. And if you'd just said you were quoting someone rather than sarcastically attacking me I might have responded differently.
I'll put this down to Saturday Night (internet) fever... I'll sit this "robust discussion" out....
