Hi all,

I have a shoot on Thursday filming a new prototype sportscar with the Scarlet. 25fps timebase.

There will be a lot of sync 4k stuff but also a lot of slomo of the car on a track test.

Usually I'd stick with a 180deg shutter but I assume a fair bit of this stuff will also be slowed further in post so If I shoot at 3k 48 fps and/or 2k 60fps with that in mind, would it be prudent to shoot with higher shutter speeds to give cleaner and more precise images to work with in post? Is there any particular formula I should work to? I've had it said that when shoot slomo for post to aim for a 180deg shutter of the final 'speed-ramped' fps instead of the shot fps. A good idea?

The subject is probably going to be doing between 100-170mph in shot, aside from some corners stuff.

As always any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Greg, you're a star. Great spots, and perfect examples of the different looks to have as a reference. Thanks for replying.

Looks like the short answer is: 'Shoot a bit of both' :)

Greg, nice pice of work!

Ben if you ever find yourself in the North feel free to drop me a line

Cheers Gary. How far north are we talking? Once I get to Islington I get altitude sickness :)

This shoot was a spot on Radical Sportscars for CBS. Went okay except for very little planning or setup time and before I knew it I was in the open boot of a people carrier on the motorway with the Scarlet doing tracking shots of the new RXC

I used the ramping feature a few times but to be honest for Scarlet the effect isn't pronounced enough and it just looked like the car had slowed down rather some cool 300-style effect. Played with varying shutter speeds and framerates for the few drive-bys we managed before a big storm hit. Will post a few clips later on today.

Thanks for the footage Ben, looks great. Mind sharing the shutter speeds/resolutions used? As much as possible for this latest shoot.
Cheers!

Thanks Brad...

The opening tracking shot would have been 3kHD 48fps 1/96 shutter. Mostly the rest is 3kHD except the really soft looking driveby with the roadsign which was 2kHD at 60fps.

Shutter speed for the others was 1/1000 except the driveby in the rain which was 1/250 and that last one that is really blurry which is 4kHD 25fps 1/50

I tried the ramping feature but as I said I think it's wasted on the Scarlet with limited fps as it just looked like the car had slowed a bit of its own accord, as opposed to sexy motion.

I shot some over cranked Scarlet footage at a skate park yesterday at with a mix of shutter from 90 to 180. See for yourself here.

It's up to your eye and your personal taste, but I think 180 is a little soft and I favor something around 130-140.

Of course, it depends on what you are shooting. You may want that motion blur for liquid and a crispy frame for sports.
