I remember looking at RED.com and REDuser.net for 3 years and waiting for fixed body to release. I am over it, but still have that hunger to shot RED. I seen a few films that sucked and some that was amazing. I seen a few films shot on Alexa and love that look as well. I just wish that 7,950 price to drop to $5,250 of less. I know that is a lot to ask for but hey I just asking. I still want that camera. What do you think will the price drop any time soon?

I am personally do not wish prices dropped. Also I must tell you that I have no RED camera now. But I will. The only reason for my point of view is that I do not wish to get a lot of Scarlets appeared in my region. And I dont wish that such cool camera goes to wrong and unexpirienced hands. I look at the Scarlet as a pure advantage in my region and I hope I will buy it sometime. If this camera goes cheaper than a lot of people can afford it and that is scarry me a bit. A wave of wining can smash this forum with tips like "how can I get a cinematic picture?". I love this forum because it have a lot of kind and expirienced people. And I think they afraids it too. ;)
When Scarlet's upgrades starts we theoretically can get BT Scarlets from RED by "4k for 4k" as it was with RED One cameras. But who knows. Possibly they dont. And the main factor in this case is the time. How many days we need to wait until it happens? Maybe better throw in adittional $4k to cover the waiting? And even if BT Scarlets appears it will be a limited offer. So I will try to catch this moment.

Yes, for years I have passed the Porsche dealership, just WAITING for the price to drop so I can have a car I clearly can't afford......

all I can afford is a 1967 VW Beetle.

oh, well.

no i dont wish price drop...you can get used scarlet body from $5K

Zharmne,
Red have created a very exclusive club.. I, like you, wanted the price to drop when I didn't have one and now I wouldn't want them to, as I now own one...

Unfortunately I think it very unlikely they will drop in price as the Scarlet-Dragon or Scarlet-Epic upgrade is available. A week ago we might have owned a dead-end camera. (in theory, not in practice of course!) but now every Scarlet owner had the potential to earn him(her)self enough and upgrade to whichever s/he chooses.. As such I cannot wait to see where I am in a years time...

And Andrey, I agree with you too. There are not many Reds in the UK either and have a very unique place in the market..

Good luck - keep shooting. I paid for mine with two jobs and a bit of tax rebate... It will be fully paid for in about 6 months.. And that was by jobs done using a SOny Z5 and Atomos Ninja... Everything's possible..

I also don't want the prices to fall on the camera bodies, but the accessories, that's a whole different thing.

Just like you I am also looking into buying a Scarlet. But yet I don't want the prices to drop. I would rather work really hard with the resources I already have to earn my way until I can afford a Red Scarlet. Like someone stated above, it's about exclusivity. If it gets to cheap the user base will change and that will possibly pollute this wonderful community that I love and visit a lot :) If the amount of owners gets too big we will start seeing extremely low quality third-party accessories and it will be difficult to separate the good stuff from all other crap!

Should've nabbed a $4000 Red One... I assume they will eventually sell BT Scarlets at the same price, who knows. The 'Scarlet Deal of a Lifetime' was good value.

exactly Daniel... those (like me i think - yes i know thats what i've decided!) who exchange their grey Scarlet bodies for a new Epic will create a BT Scarlet for others to buy...

if you are serious and want to shoot or work shooting, the 10k a red kit costs right now is nothing....if you want to open an ice cream store, you have to spend a lot more....if you start a dog grooming business, you need more capital....i actually can't think of many self employed professions in which you need less then 10k to start out...but really you don't even need that to start shooting, you can rent...or shoot on a 5d....there are so many options....
a film maker has never needed so little money as they do today to actually get something out there.....oscar winning documentary was partly shot on an iPhone.....and i am pretty sure it wasn't even a 5.....
on the other hand....3 years at $10/day would do the trick as well....

Yeah, the official RED accessories are just way too overpriced. I can kinda understand the debate on the tech of the Redmags, but an Israeli arm is $120 when I just got an amazingly sturdy/heavy duty one on Amazon for $20. I like the design of the RED stuff but it's just too much, but I understand that they have to make up costs somehow since these cameras are delivering a high end look for pennies on the dollar, in comparison.

Black Magic just released a 4k camera at $4000.. I think Red has to do something with the prices of the scarlet or else the Red market is going to take a pretty big dent.. Anyone looking to upgrade their DSLR will look at a BMPC before a Red Scarlet right now just for the $4000-$8000 price difference alone, regardless which is better in the long run or not.. In my opinion, it's only a matter of time. At which time I will also pick up a scarlet!

i am sure black magic will sell a ton of these...i will probably buy one! but i am not sure red NEEDS to compete with this directly.....by the time this camera ships, RED will have quite a few scarlets trade ins which they can turn around as BT....and the scarlet price might drop anyway....
just like arri isn't really afraid of the scarlet or the black magic....different cameras....the great thing is that there are more and more options and prices will keep coming down....
i would be VERY surprised to see the 4k black magic shipping in volume before next year.....the 2.5K ef mount is on back order everywhere (or not available mft mount)....so i would not make any plans to shoot with this thing anytime soon.....

Justin,
last year several thousand people put deposits on the 2.5k camera. And non of them have a camera yet, yet alone a 4k version. SO this time next year, NAB2014, when we've all upgraded our Scarlets to Dragon or Epic - lets talk BMCC

Now yes, the camera is a great design, although i prefer the pocket camera, but in terms of what it can do to Red's reputation.... no contest

I dont want the BCMM i want RED RED RED lol OK let me Re-state I can get the Camera but the RED accessories is the killer ... I could have had a scarlet for 5k but the transfer fee and then but time i buy the RED accessories the warranty will be up so i ll be up shits river

I can only assume that most of the profit are from the RED accessories, redmags being the most profitable.

It's not in the financial interest of anyone making money off this trade, who owns camera and accessories, that the price drops. The higher the better. Higher prices means better rentals rates, and even if the camera is thrown is a gift to a real friend, the perceived value of that is higher.

The Epic we bought at $27500 I must say we regret. We did not make our money back as fast as prices dropped. We would have been better off renting that same camera from someone else. Owning vs renting has nothing to do with "art" or "talent' it's a business decision, and we could have shot the same exact stuff exactly as artistically with rented cameras, and we'd be ahead now financially.

Lower price has also meant that the prestige factor of Epic has gone down somewhat. And before you start saying "It shouldn't matter" I don't care what "should" be, what I know is that in the real working world it does matter to people who sign my checks. They want what they perceive to be the best, not what is cheapest, and something being that much cheaper does not help create the perception that it is best.

I'd rather RED keep the prices at least where they are on the camera bodies (make their money there, even if production prices drop) but pass the savings along to Redmags first, then whatever else.

To me, if everyone can have a RED, then it pollutes the market and there will be a ton of YouTube videos by amateurs whose parents bought them one... then, when "Hollywood" wants to shoot a feature, the image of RED is now the same as a Flip camera, "Oh, RED? That's the camera that guy on YouTube used to make that video of _____." Image is everything. Look at Alexa... the camera has it's pros and cons compared to an Epic but their "image" is no "must-have" by producers who don't know the difference. RED can't downgrade the value of their imagine... and their cameras. However, like I was saying, if RED is turning a nice profit and they're about to pass savings along, I'd much rather have Redmags for big reductions so I can use my 'high end' camera as much as I want without "counting feet" like we had to with film. Imagine if we could just get these cards for cheaper... we could just shoot like crazy all day, not have to stop down, dump, worry about how much space we have, did we rent enough, etc.

Also, if RED lowers the bodies too much, the second they do that, it's money out of our pocket too, as the resale plummets on our used cameras.

It's obvious Red maintains its reputation as well as loyal users, but this doesn't change the fact that their market will take a big dent.. But again, these are just my opinions.. New customers are still very important to any company, especially in these times, and with other competitors offering a 4K resolution at $4000 this will steer many away from spending the extra $4k-$8k on Red.. With technology changing at ridiculous rates, even the epic had a dramatic price decrease over the last year if i'm not mistaken.. I think it's just a matter of time before we see some change in the scarlet price tag. The BMPC's start shipping out in June, so I guess we'll find out.

lol with all due respect, ya guys are all mostly pros and long time in the field but saying "i do not wish the price drops" is kinda. . . well let me put it this way, "haha nice joke ^^ but seriously now". . . the price drop "question" needs to be adressed. . . if you are asking "well i only have 1$ and want to buy a 10k cam, so can I has me some price drops" then . . . this makes me go -.- *geez

But if you are asking " compared to whats on the market (or will be shortly), do you guys think the "price is right" ?

Well I dont know, i personally think the scarlet deserves a price around 8k (dragon btw) if compared to the BMPC 4k for 4k. Because you get a sh*tload more out of a scarlet than the BMPC. It isnt all about the 4k sensor, what about framerate, what about workflow, what about hardware to add to your cam, being fully supported by the major players out there.

So 5k for a scarlet wouldnt be fair. But I would love to see that price ^^
